Downloading a Running Phase on Redundant Controller

Hello Everyone,

What actually happens if we download a phase to a redundant controller while it's running?

DeltaV gives a warning: continuing with the download wil cause the phase not to be updated on the standby controller. What does this mean?

1. If there is a switchover while the phase is still running, the old version of the phase will be running (not a big deal), but if the phase unloads and loads again, it will have the new version on both controllers.

2. The standby controller is not updated to the new version at all, so it will always have the old version of the phase. We need a second download, while the phase is not running, to ensure the standby is also updated.

  • Hi,
I would expect that a running phase is communicating with the batch server and this should be the opinion thst the stby controller cann not be updated. At least it must be updated when phase wents to offline

    It's digitally yours

Well, for simplex it's easy: the loaded phase will continue with the old logic, but when it's loaded again it will be the new version. I'm wondering whether redundant needs a second download to achieve this.
  • Hi,
I think it works a bit different during a download on phases and the 2nd download on a standby controller became obsolete in V12 or V13 due to automatically update now of logic from the active to the standby controller.
Before you needed the 2nd download for the standby controller to synchronize them so far as I remember.
You download only a template of a phase. If a phase is loaded, then you get a copy into the memory as running instance on a unit and this will end as normal with the old configuration even with a download in between. A start of the same phase class in that controller on a second unit will now start the new version. You would have two different running versions in the units.
Unfortunately, the control studio shows only the latest version from the database. So, your old phase online looks a bit crazy if steps are deleted or added.
During a redundancy switch over, the standby controller load then also the new template and try to go on with the last step. This might make problems if your changes are exactly at this actual step, which maybe is now deleted or else.
