Proper shield grounding and isolation to analog input cards.

Hi All,

Couple days ago we lost 3 analog input cards at our well locations due to lightning it took out a few channels on each AI card.

Looking at our protection circuitry we only had DeltaV analog Input card transient suppression with regular 2 wire contact block on the DeltaV side and transient suppression then at the wellside we also have a transient suppression 4-20mA to the sensor.

What kind of lightning protection system should be used to prevent the Analog cards from being fried in the future? Any and all ideas are appreciated and thank you.....

Tomorrow I plan to install MCR-SL-2CP-I-I Phoenix contact 2CH 4-20mA isolators at the DeltaV side before the transient surge suppressors.

  • I should add that the twisted pair shields are connected to the ground at the DeltaV location only. Tomorrow I will check that all the shield wires at the wells are isolated from the well grounds.
