Valve position feedback in DVC6200f?

I received this question in a comment to an Emerson Process Experts blog post and wanted to ask if someone in this great group could answer and expand on the subject...Thanks!

-----------

Can we get a valve position feedback signal via Foundation Field bus interface from a Digital Valve Positioner?

  • Yes;
    Travel
    Travel (TRAVEL.VALUE [34.2]) displays the actual position of the valve in percent (%) of calibrated travel.
  • Advantage of FF protocol is that DVC has functional block AI which can provide valve position without external position transmitter. This can be configured through control studio of HOST system.

  • Yeah, that's one of the many beauties of real-time digital networking, you can add the valve position feedback as an afterthought at a click of a button without running additional cable or adding AI card because the signals are virtual sharing the same pair of wires. The same applies to intelligent two-wire on-off valves and electric actuators / motor operated valves (MOV)
    PS the feedback is already available in the AO block so in most cases you don't need an AI block. In DeltaV the feedback goes straight into the faceplate and other places without custom configuration - easy
