Ignition and DeltaV

Hey John, I am new for the OPC-UA family. I try to set up communication between DeltaV PK controller and Ignition, I am thinking about to use ACM from AUTOSOL. But looks like I can direct using the OPC-UA server from DeltaV to read the tags right? Would you mind share some of your experience about this type of com set up? Thank you so much!

  • Hi, Paul,
Assuming Ignition has an OPC-UA server (and a quick internet search shows it does), you certainly would be able to use the OPC-UA server in the PK Controller (used standalone) along with the OPC Mirror (or similar) to transfer process data from the controller to Ignition. I have not used Ignition and also would not be the expert in the use of OPC. I'm sure that someone in the EmersonExchange365 community will have applicable experience and can add to this thread to help out. I look forward to reading what folks in this community will provide.

Ignition would be the OPC-UA client. PK the OPC-UA server. With that an OPC Mirror is not required.

Thank you so much! For OPC-UA, do I still need KEPWARE, I don't think Ignition has a driver made for PK controller?
I know PK controller also support Modbus-TCP, but my tags from PK is like PI-05-0007/AI1/OUT.CV
if use Modbus-TCP, does the tag should be a register type, like 40001?
  • In reply to Paul Liu:

Once you use OPC-UA you don't need drivers. Automation software just needs OPC-UA. That's all. The Ignition website says they have an OPC-UA module with OPC-UA client. So no need for Kepware in between. No need to map through Modbus/TCP registers.

Thank you so much sir! I would like to stay with OPC-UA rather that use Autosol, autosol only support OPC-DA, or Modbus-TCP. If use the modbus-tcp, there should be more work for the mapping.

    One more question Jonas.
When I set up the OPC-UA from Ignition, I only need the IP and port from DeltaV OPC-UA server, and they need to confirm Trusted Clients, just like doing KEPWARE correct?
  • In reply to Jonas Berge:

I assumed that Ignition would be an OPC Server - shouldn't assume things! Thanks for that important detail! The OPC Mirror isn't needed between an OPC server and OPC client, simplifying the solution.
Unless there are other reasons for using Ignition as the HMI, Emerson does offer a local operator panel designed to work with the PK Controller.

Good morning Mr. Wheelis, Ignition Perspective will be used on mobile device. I am sure there is a local HMI works with PK controller. Thank you for everyone!
