battery back-up

Dear Expert

in a project , it is needed to have  Integral Power Back-Up to maintain power for the controllers, I/O signal conditioning devices and two-wire field instruments for a minimum period of 20 minutes upon loss of all DCS power. At this state the DCS should conduct the plant to a safe state. RAM battery Backup to be provided for CPU with capacity to maintain for at least 72 hours. Control system shall be capable to test back up battery every 8 hours. DCS should automatically receive the alarm & functionality of integral power backup.can you suggest any solution?

Thanks in advance

  • That's a very long time for a DC UPS, particularly where a generator is a typical consideration for power loss situations. If I received that requirement, I would challenge it.

That said, PULS Power has a series of DIN-mounted DC UPS equipment that may meet your needs.

  • You are going to need an industrial UPS system for your DeltaV control system. Since you already have the time frame you require the control system to be operational after a loss of power condition, you will need to determine the current draw from all the devices for you DeltaV system. (e.g. computers, network switches, controllers, instruments, valve positioners, etc.) With that information you should contact an industrial UPS manufacturer, like Tripp Lite - but there are many others, for suggestions.

When planning for loss of power conditions I always round up so that I have additional capacity of at least 25%. As batteries age they will lose some of their load capacity and this will shorten your desired DCS operation time.

Also, it would be a good idea to begin a battery maintenance program after your UPS is installed. There are several options, depending on the type of batteries used. You can install a continuous monitoring system or have your plant personnel conduct inspections of the physical condition, specific gravity, battery cell resistance, and interterminal connection resistance checks.

It will take some work to get everything planned and configured, but if you do it all in one project it will be less headache in the end.

Is there in built battery in Delta V controllers to preserve the engineering program data in the event of power loss to the system?
  • In reply to Prasenjit Dasgupta:

the downloaded configuration is stored in NonVolatile Memory. there is a Cold Restart setting that must be configured that allows the controller to restart and load its configuration. Max window is 30 days.

the controller indicates its restart location that can be local or workstation. during partial downloads the location will be workstation. cold restart download will update the NVM file and set location to the controller.

in both cases the controller will restart if configured to do so. the download file may need to come from the proplus if restart location is Workstation.
