DeltaV Version

Can anyone say the difference between DeltaV version 10.3 and 11.3

  • Arguably the most important difference is that v11.3 and S-Series controllers introduced the concept of electronic marshalling with CHARMS.  Think of each I/O channel as being dynamically customizable.  The signal for each channel passes through a characterization module (CHARM) before being passed through to DeltaV.  The CHARMS are organized under a CHARMS I/O Card (CIOC).  The CIOCs (or even individual CHARMS) are assigned to a controller.  Please see the following Emerson whitepaper on Electronic Marshalling (www2.emersonprocess.com/.../PDS_S-series-Electronic-Marshalling.pdf).

A second consideration is the support for the Wireless I/O Card (WIOC) on v11.3 and S-Series controllers.  A WIOC allows you to incorporate data from your WirelessHART pervasive field network devices into DeltaV without the complexity of configuring a 1420 Wireless Gateway. (www2.emersonprocess.com/.../PDS_WIOC.pdf)

Finally, v11.3 also introduced Alarm Help.  An operator may access probable causes of alarms and suggested resolutions through an icon on the faceplate or detail display.  Alarm Help is updatable and may be downloaded without interrupting module execution in the controller. (www2.emersonprocess.com/.../PDS_Alarm_Help.pdf)

There are other differences, but in my opinion, electronic marshalling and simplified wireless HART device integration are two of the more important features introduced in v11.3.

I would recommend v11.3.1 for any new system as the current available workstation and server hardware comes with Windows 7 adn Server 2008 OS. This is the latest OS so you have the longest support window.  V11.3.1 also provides enhancements in licensing, new diagnostic data for Profibus and DeviceNet drives (No DST), HCD Display dynamos and Graphic Themes, in addition to all that Ben mentioned above.

On v11.3.1, you can choose to install M-series or S-series controllers and IO. If you are not planning to use CHARMS, or the new WIOC, you could go with either hardware platoform.  HOwever, I'd recommend the S-series because it offers the new H1 card with integrated power conditioner.  This will reduce installation footprint and simplify design.  It also keeps your options open incase you want to use CHARMS for conventional IO, including discrete signals.

You have a choice to use M-series or S-series together in the same system, but the limitation is that M-series controllers only talk with M-series IO.  You need S-series controllers for CHARMS, WIOC and the new H1 with power.

Remember that DeltaV is more than just the controller and IO hardware.  The software in the controllers and on the rest of the workstations and servers is the same.  So whether you chose M-series or S-seris hardware, you should be looking at v11.3.1 software version of DeltaV.
