how to compare performance of various PIDs wich are inbuilt different FF devices

Dear sir, I am a student of Mtech process Instrumentation engineering & we have delta V DCS system & some FF devices. The delta V system has its own PID, again the FF flow transmitter that we have has its own PID, the digital control valve which we have in our lab based flow setup has its own PID...My question is that i want to compare the performance of these three PIDs for same application that is for control valve opening control as they all are from different vender so having different PID algorithems....so how can I compare these three PIDs...can please suggest some tools for this..

  • The PID algorithm is fundamentally the same for all vendors so there should not be much variation due to algorithm. However, one difference between control-in-the-field (CIF) and centralized control is that CIF is time-synchronized from sensor to actuator since fieldbus is time-synchronized end-to-end thanks to close loop digital control as there is no analog signal involved anymore. You can see the video here which is a software simulation of what you want to do:

For pressure and flow, FF loops performs 10-15% better than a loop using 4-20 mA signals. Most beneficial at slow [1 second] controller cycle time. Significant if loops are run slow to decrease controller load. Enables more loops per controller.

We have done these tests in Emerson as well. I will send you material if I can find it.
