Commission EIOC

I have a new EIOC that will not show up in decommissioned nodes. It is flashing LEDs that indicate it is indeed in the decommissioned state and I can ping it at the default address.... it just wont' show up.. so i can't commission it. Yeah, i've rebooted and all that. I have only one thing on the network right now and it's the EIOC.. not controllers. Well, i have a Proplus and an AS. But that's it. I'm confident my ping is the EIOC. Network activity lights all good. I've manually decommissioned using the BOL steps about 6 times.. I'm getting nowhere.

  • if you have spare IOP , I thought you can try to change the IOP if you haven' t done , and try again.

  • If it is new, do you have the license for it loaded for the EIOC? Not sure it would prevent it from showing up in decommissioned nodes but I know it will keep it from working.

    seems like the EIOC is bad. I swapped with a different one and it shows up, i put the bad one on my existing 2 wide and it won't show up on that proplus either

    When manually decommissioning, did you just disconnect the Ethernet cables, or remove both Ethernet modules from the carrier?

    Have you tried rebooting the ProPlus?

    removed both modules. and yes.Have a guardian teams call at 1pm... let's see how useless it is. I'm guessing this thing is just busted.

    solved... make sure you let the stupid thing sit for like 30 minutes after decommissioning... apparently that is required to let the memory clear.

    Glad it is resolved. Trial and error problem solving can be frustrating. But also we end up with some not so clear cause/effect scenarios. So here's my recap on this:

    First, you should not be on v14.3 on a production system. You should upgrade to v14.LTS. That cannot be done on line with EIOC, SZ and PK controllers because there is a change in the IOP ethernet port security.

    A decommissioned node broadcasts its presence on the DeltaV networks (Primary and Secondary) so the Pro Plus will see it. This sends the MAC address of the device to the Pro Plus. If the MAC address is defined as a commissioned node, the Pro Plus will commission the device the appropriate IP address and Node name. Otherwise it appears in the Decommissioned list.

    Reasons for not appearing in the decommissioned list:
    - Node is not decommissioned (either commissioned from IOP's or from Pro Plus automatically)
    - Node decommissioned broadcast message not received by the Pro Plus (network connectivity or Smart Switch Ports locked)
    - Database Server not processing Broadcast request (restart Database Server or reboot proplus.

    Note: If network cables are crossed, node will show up in decommissioned list, but once commissioned it will not communicate (red x). This is because the decommissioned broadcast message is still received by the pro plus, but once the IP addresses are set in the device, Unicast messaging based on IP address is unable to get to the appropriate NIC cards on the pro plus.

    Issue 1: Is the Device physically decommissioned?

    I'm not sure if this node was truly decommissioned. The original message states the "Flashing LED's confirmed it is Decommissioned" . To be precise, only the Red LED will be flashing on the EIOC, with the two Green LED's off. If the user meant the red LED's of the two processors were flashing, then they were decommissioned. But if a Green LED and Red LED were flashing, it was not. and that explains where there wasr no node in Decommissioned list. If no GREEN LED's, then something else was happening.

    Issue 2: Decommissioned Broadcast message not reaching Pro Plus.

    Either a network issue on both primary and secondary or a Smart Switch Port Lock is blocking broadcast, or defective IOP's/EIOC hardware. Since we cannot flash the lights until we see the node in Explorer, do we know if connection is good?

    You can confirm using Network Command center by viewing the ports of the unlocked switch the device is connected to. you will see the device appear on the port when connected, or disconnected. You also see the LED's on the IOP light up when connected. This confirms the device is connected to the port and working.

    TreyB also pinged the Decommissioned address from the Pro plus. Primary 10.5.255.255, Secondary 10.9.255.255 (or is it .254?). However, if there is another decommissioned device on the network, it too will be at that address. that may not be conclusive. If you disconnect and there is no response, then reconnect and there is, that's a good sign your device is physically connected via ethernet.

    Issue 3. Database Server not responding.

    This is not common. But there are instances the Pro Plul is physically connected and even communicating with controllers and modules but does not perform all its run time functions. In this case, it is not recognizing Decommissioned broadcasts. This recently happed to me. I was commissioning a new CIOC and SX Controller but neither appeared in Decommissioned list. I After steps 1 and 2 above, I stopped and restarted the Database Server through Database Administration. I also decommissioned another node, which worked, except that node also did not appear in the decommissioned list. that told me it was not a node issue but a pro plus issue.

    being at v14.3, circa 2018, good chance your system could have "issues" that are now resolved.

    Physical Decommissioning

    On the EIOC, and other similar products with IOP's, the commissioning data is stored in the IOP's and as long as the two Processors are located in the same slots, (or even just the primary card) the IOP's will commission the node upon power up. The idea being that if the hardware is still installed in the same physical slot, it must be serving the same function it had when powered down.

    Note that when you remove a standby card from a commissioned node, the node will advise the Pro Plus that the card is no longer its partner and this removes the card from the commissioning files on the Pro Plus and the IOP's. If you remove a simplex card, there is no update to the Pro Plus and the node remains commissioned in the database. Also, if you remove a standby while the node is not connected to the database, the card is not removed and if installed in another location, the Pro Plus may inappropriately commission that card as its old identity.

    It is always best to decommission nodes in the database prior to repurposing them, removing them from a system. When shipping a system after full FAT with installed nodes, if you remove the cards and ship separately you absolutely want to decommission prior to removing the cards. Otherwise, as you install cards at site, they may get commissioned by the Pro Plus unless you've installed all the cards in their previous location, nodes will light up and commission incorrectly, with unpredictable results. or you could call them surprises.

    To physically decommission an EIOC, CIOC etc,
    1. Remove both IOP's and remove both cards
    2. install Secondary card in Primary slot and power up, wait for card to go decommissioned status
    3. Install Primary IOP, confirm node shows up in Decommissioned list.
    4. Install Secondary IOP
    5. Install secondary card. Wait for decommissioned list to update with redundant node.
