Safety Systems and Terminal Lightning

I ran across this articles on Lightning rods LinkedIn from lightningprotection.com .   I'm from Florida the lightning capital of the world and never did I think that there was this much technology attracting and preventing lightning.  Obviously here as in other areas of the world lightning and fuel storage tanks are a potential bad combination.   The article based outlines three technologies.

Early Stream Emitter (ESE) - designed to trigger the early initiation of upward spirals which increases lightning attraction

Charge Transfer Systems (CTS) - designed to prevent lightning by collecting the induced charge from clouds

Dissipation Array Systems (DAS) - A type of CTS that bleeds off the induced charge to create a zone of protection.

Terminals by their very nature would use the CTS or DAS types of systems to avoid the potential fire around the roof tank seals.  In the event of a fire rather than send someone up with a fire extinguisher it might be better to have a suppression system in place tied into the Fire and Gas detection system and the overall terminal safety system.  Check out the cool video of this foam suppression system in action from Foam Fatale.
