Over tightening of gland packing result in poor control valve performance

Need expertise advise,

Tightening of the gland packing is a common remedy if someone found that the packing is leaking. However over tightening may result in higher deadband that will impact the product yield. Can this be resolved using a better packing design or a continuous control valve monitoring program to identify if the valve require special attention? Thanks.

  • Both, there has been improvement in packing design which results in more consistent packing force throughout the lifespan of the valve. In-service friction and deadband diagnostic trending is also useful, as you can never fully predict what could happen in the field. Friction diagnostic can also reveal other issues that are not due to packing.
