Problem:

In a global market where competition is ever increasing, improved reliability and reduced maintenance spend is always on the Plant Manager’s mind.  As such, critical assets must be paired with reliable control valves in order to optimize plant efficiency.

In the refining industry, the hot high pressure separator (HHPS) letdown application exhibits a challenging process that demands a properly designed Severe Service control valve.  This application will produce high pressure drops in which erosion, outgassing, flowing particulate and high vibration can cause severe valve damage and drive costly repairs.

After incurring charges of nearly $500K USD per year in order to clean and repair the competitor’s control valve on a recurring basis, a European based petroleum refinery contacted Emerson Process Management for an engineered solution for their HHPS level control application.

Solution:

Following other severe service control valve upgrades at this customer site in, discussions began in early 2015 to develop a solution to the troublesome HHPS valves.  After completing a thorough application review and listening to the customer’s need to avoid piping modifications, the Fisher Special Products Group engineered a custom block forged Type 461 control valve with preheating connections, packing leak-off connections, and special hub end connections as a drop in replacement.

Results:

When installed, the Fisher Control valves will facilitate well over $500K in avoided maintenance costs and associated production downtime.
