Refinery Desalter Efficient and Reliable Operation
Jim Cahill
While oil and gas production processing equipment can separate the gas, oil, basic sediment and water from the production stream, this equipment typically can’t separate the salt that can be found in solution in the oil. At high enough concentrations, this salt can lead to corrosion and fouling of downstream refining equipment and operations. In a Flow Control article, Critical Level Control Ensures Highest Efficiency…

Selecting a safety-critical level instrument using undetected (DU) failure rates
Peta Glenister
Dangerous undetected (DU) failure rates are often considered more relevant than safe failure fraction as a basis for selecting a safety-critical instrument . The latest vibrating fork level switches from Emerson have been designed with enhanced diagnostics capability, to reduce the number of DU failures and increase plant safety. Read Tim Hill’s article on this subject here on pages 27 to 31. http://bit.ly/2olGhhd

Stepwise Tank Gauging Modernization
Jim Cahill
Instrumentation for manufacturing continues to improve as the electronics grow ever more powerful. Modernizing instrumentation such as tank gauging level sensors on bulk liquids storage tanks has been made easier through emulation technology. This quick, 1-minute YouTube video, Tank Gauging Emulation: Unlock the Potential in Your System , shows how older, less reliable level measurement devices can be upgraded, one…

Adding Wireless Level Switches for Storage Tank Overfill Prevention
Jim Cahill
Storage tanks holding volatile fluids must have reliable level measurements to avoid unsafe overfill conditions. A Control Engineering Asia article, Wireless vibrating fork technology enables Hengyang Petrochemical to implement cost-effective overfill prevention solution , describes how this petrochemical producer sought to reduce the risk of overfill conditions. The plant had existing non-contacting radar level measurement…

Point and Continuous Level Measurement in Water and Wastewater Applications
Jim Cahill
Across many industries, level measurements are critical ones for safe and reliable operations. This is true for the water and wastewater industries. The choice of technologies for these measurements is broad, especially since they fall into two categories point-based (on/off switching) and continuous. In a Water Online article, Point Versus Continuous Level Measuring Technologies , Emerson’s Lydia Miller provides guidance…

Solving heater treater optimization problems with Rosemount level measurement.
Peta Glenister
A major oil and gas company operating in the Bakken oil field was having problems with their heater treater separators which were causing gas to be carried over into the tanks. By utilizing Rosemount 5300 Guided Wave Radar and Rosemount 3051S ERS Electronic Remote Seals they were able to eliminate the free gas and water carryover. When you need to know more...
Peta Glenister
One of our midstream energy customers in Colorado recently upgraded their Rosemount 2120 level switches to the brand new wired HART Rosemount 2140 level detector. Frustrated by the lack of information they were getting back from the level switches due to a lack of remote diagnostics functionality, the company wanted a smart device that would not just send an alarm in the event of an overfill, but would also alert in…

Proof Testing Level Measurement Devices
Jim Cahill
Safety instrumented systems (SIS) include the sensor(s), final control element(s) and logic solver(s) for each of the safety instrumented functions (SIFs) in the SIS. To verify the SIFs are performing the amount of risk reduction intended for their application, they must be periodically proof tested. PCN Europe magazine interviewed Emerson’s Teddy Tzegazeab on how proof testing has changed for SIFs with liquid level…

What good is a safety level measurement if you can’t trust it?
Peta Glenister
What good is a safety level measurement if you can’t trust it? A coal fired power plant installed an electronic gauging system for both level indication and level alarms on their plant’s steam drums. The system was configured to give Hi and Hi-Hi alarms and to shut down the boiler in case of emergency. However, within two years of operation they experienced leaking electrodes, and some of these leaks then caused false…

Level Sensor Safety Proof Testing
Jim Cahill
Backing up your computer or server is a waste of time if restoring the backup fails when you need it. Good practice is to test these backups on separate test systems periodically to make sure they restore properly. Similarly, safety instrumented systems (SISs) need to assure that each safety instrumented function (SIF)/safety loop does what it’s intended to do to bring the plant to a safe state in the event of a demand…
