Asian Steel Company Upgrades and Enhances Obsolete Dust Collection System with Edge Control Technology

When you need to solve a critical operational problem fast and easily, think edge technology. An Asian-based steel manufacturer with over 15,000 employees faced a pressing issue with dust collection in order to create a cleaner industrial workplace and adhere to government mandates.

The company produces 8 million tons of steel annually for global distribution using processes such as coking, sintering, iron making, steelmaking and steel rolling, and needed to replace obsolete dust collector equipment. Driving forces were the health of their employees, as well as regulatory compliance that could result in fines if not met. Trying to maintain the obsolete equipment resulted in significant time and cost in maintenance and troubleshooting.

The company turned to Emerson for a turn-key solution to replace the obsolete control system and valves. They chose an edge device and graphical display device to enable system monitoring and IIoT connectivity. The entire solution is packaged in a standard cabinet to ensure seamless integration on site.

  • The PACSystems TM VersaMax micro PLC is used for discrete control of the dust collector system.
  • The QuickPanel+TM HMI display is used for system monitoring and display at the machine.
  • The PACSystems RXi2 edge device is used for data storage and system analysis including pollution reporting and remote visualization.
  • ASCO 353-series pulse valves are used for pulse jet cleaning to ensure machine uptime and system efficiency.

What kinds of operational challenges could edge technology solve for you?
