Smart Card for HMI Data Entry

Hello,

I am looking to interface SMART cards with DeltaV Operate/Live. As a part of a process, an operator must enter their badge number to confirm they have completed a particular task, such as replacing a IBC tote. This is done at a generically logged in operator station.

Currently, they must type their PIN into a text entry window in Operate and press OK. They would like to bring up the data entry interface, scan their badge, and press OK.

Has anyone done something like this - interfacing a SMART card or an RFID reader to DeltaV? It would not specifically have to be to the HMI, it could write directly to a control module via OPC.

Thank you,

Dave

  • After some further research, I realized I was looking at the wrong technology/terms. What I am actually after is interfacing RFID badges with DeltaV, not Smart Cards. It appears as though there are Ethernet I/P and OPC UA badge readers on the market that we could talk to.

Has anyone done this and have any readers/strategies to recommend?

    Thank you,
    Dave
  • I used a Mercury 2+ card reader with a serial link to a DeltaV serial card . The card reader uses Modbus protocol, see for more information their website http://www.mercuryhmi.co.uk

I works quite well and the reader is Ex (zone 0 ) certified.

    Hi Pieter,

Thank you for pointing me in a direction! What application do you use your reader for?

    Thank you

The M2+ card readers are widely used in loading/unloading of products in bulk distribution terminal applications for security and authentication. I believe interface to DeltaV was done years ago. Engineering team in Pune built "DeltaV preset" and solution that uses the M2+ reader. Also there are Sentry readers that is card reader without display and keypad.

I used it to identify Truck Drivers in a truck loading application, the card gives you a unique number and in Ifix it was used to lookup this number and did a few basic checks on the driver (known to the system and a valid driver license)
