Industrial Edge Control Technology

At the Emerson Exchange Americas Virtual Series, Emerson’s Derek Thomas shared his thoughts on starting small when tackling Big Data challenges with Industrial Edge Control Technology. Here is his presentation’s abstract:

Edge control is redefining the traditional control model by bringing together OT and IT technology in a single solution capable of logic, data management and analytics. This incredible evolution and transformation of PLCs and Industrial PCs is creating new possibilities for tackling today’s IIoT and digital transformation challenges by enabling customers to start small at a machine, scale to plant-wide analytics, and make manageable investments with a single platform. Learn how Emerson’s PACSystems RX3i CPL410 Edge Controller can operate as either an IIoT-enabled PLC or an advanced supervisory controller for your manufacturing operations. This industry leading controller combines the powerful PACSystems runtime, PACEdge IoT platform and Movicon WebHMI to deliver unmatched capability and possibilities for customers.

Derek opened describing PACEdge, which provides all aspects of edge processing to simplify your IIoT application development, deployment, and administration. All components necessary in the IIoT application lifecycle are brought together in one package with a unified interface. It is designed to ensure security of operational data and enable secure interaction with IT and cloud applications.

It runs on industrially rated hardware so that it can be placed next to or near the machine to optimize control processes by leveraging data and analytics from external sources such as enterprise, ecological and environmental databases via the Industrial Internet.

PACEdge provides powerful interactive visualization and analysis tools connected out of the box with timeseries and relational databases for data logging. The PACEdge architecture is built to allow for safe de-segregation of operational data and networks so they can interact with higher level IT and cloud solutions. It can connect multiple cloud vendor together at PACEdge to pull data from any of the cloud suppliers and combine with control system data and push to a different cloud supplier.

It combines deterministic PLC-based control with non-deterministic Linux based control and information management for logic, analytics and visualization.
