Wireless Model Predictive Control

At Emerson Exchange – 2014, Orlando, FL. I worked with Bailee Roach, University Of Texas, Austin and Willy Wojsznis, Emerson Process Management to co-host a workshop of Wireless Model Predictive Control (MPC). In this workshop we addressed how wireless measurements may be used in model predictive. Information was provided on a field trail of this technology that is being conducted at the UT Pickle site, Austin on a divided wall column. The divided wall column (DWC) design can provide savings in energy and capital cost compared to a conventional column design. In the installation at the University of Texas, WirelessHART transmitters are applied for many of the process measurements used in control. MPC application is crucial for achieving operational stability and effective operation of the DWC process. In this workshop we discuss a novel concept for incorporating wireless measurements into DeltaV PredictPro. The workshop details wireless MPC design and discuss the application challenges illustrated by test results.
