Migration of Existing Control System Tools to FDI

Since the announcement of the Field Device Integration effort at the Interkama/Hannover trade fair in 2007, many companies have contributed to the development of the Field Device Integration (FDI) standard, IEC 62769. This standard is scheduled to be released in 2015. One of the objectives of the ISA104 committee, Device Integration, is to adopt and facilitate the application of FDI for data access of field devices in automation systems. In the latest ISA104 committee, held on November 10th, the invited presentation was given by Professor Christian Diedrich. The topic of his presentation was “Migration of Existing Control System Tools to FDI”. In this presentation, professor Diedrich provides some background on the development of FDI and how existing tools based on EDDL or on FDT/DTM may be migrated to FDI. With Professor Diedrich’s permission, I have created a YouTube video that combines the audio portion and slides used in his presentation. If you have an interest in learning more about FDI and the impact this technology will have in the future on control system tools, then you will find Professor Diedrich’s presentation of interest. You may view the presentation in the window below.
