10 Ways to Improve Functional Safety Without Picking Up a Calculator

Session abstract:

Users & suppliers of safety systems are obsessed with numbers; sometimes those numbers are very big, sometimes ridiculously small. Engineers like numbers & rely on them as evidence that we are doing a good job. Why? Every disaster report says other factors dominate the list of causes. “I’d rather see a properly designed & well maintained SIL 1 safety function than a poorly designed & badly maintained SIL 3 safety function”. If we focus on PFD’s with decimal places then we will fail to recognise those effects with PFD’s of 1, systematic failures. This session will consider 10 areas of IEC61511 where you can gain the most improvement in safety from your SIS.
