Digital Valve Controller Enables Continued Operation of Nuclear Power Plant

Session Abstract

A few weeks after an operator relased a significant amount of aluminates inside the air distribution system of an operating unit, some valves in the turbine hall malfunctioned.  The Nuclear Regulator challenged the operator to demonstrate the continued safety of the plant.  For critical instruments, a solution was found based on the monitoring capacity of digital controllers : the drive signal was used as an advanced indicator of the instrument condition. These checks demonstrated the operability of the safety-related equipments of the plant, allowing continued operation in a critical period.
