Frequently Asked Questions

As we continue to get new members from across the globe, I've gotten some "how do I" questions that I wanted to share. If you have questions like these, please add a reply to this thread.

  1. Q: How do I reply to a thread? I don't see a reply button.
A: You must be logged into your account on the site, and be joined into the particular track where you want to respond.

  2. Q: How do I control the amount of email I receive?
A: The top right "Settings" link takes you to the settings page. One of the the tabs is "Email".

Your choices range from shutting off all emails to adjusting the types of notifications you receive to receiving daily or weekly digests from the tracks you've joined. For example, if you only wish to received daily digests you can uncheck "Send notifications" and select Daily digests for the tracks of interest:

  3. Q: How do I post a blog post?
A: Blog posts are different than discussion threads in that they require an administrator to add you to the list of people available to blog. This is different from the discussion/question forum area where all you need is what's described in question #1. Please send me a note if you wish to be added to one or more of the blogs.

  4. Q: How do I add cool pictures like Travis does?
A: When starting a new thread, you are already in the rich text mode with buttons like you're used to in Word. When replying to a thread you have a link to put your reply into rich text mode. There is a button for uploading pictures:

Make sure to wait for the green "Uploaded" message before hitting the "Insert" hyperlink:

  5. Q: How do I add documents to new discussion threads or replies to existing threads like I saw on this Orifice Plate thread?
A: Make sure you are in the rich text mode and then go to the "Options" tab (next to the "Compose" tab) and click to add file attachment:

  6. Q: How do I add a hyperlink to my post or reply?
A: Again make sure you're in rich text mode. Select the text you to which you wish to hyperlink. In the popup replace the words in the "Link URL" with the hyperlink:

  7. Q: How do I embed videos like I saw over in the Temperature track?
A:  You'll need to be in the rich text editor. Click the video button where you can put in a YouTube URL or upload a video. It's better to link to a YouTube video since the upload size is limited and much less efficient than the bandwidth available through YouTube:

  8. Q: How do I fix the formatting from my copy and pastes from Word, Outlook, or other Microsoft Office app?
A: Cut and pastes from the Microsoft apps adds a lot of "garbage HTML" that can impact the look of your posts. Use the Word icon button and paste into the popup dialog. This button's function is designed to remove this garbage HTML and fix the formatting.

  9. Q: How do I search for people to "friend" and follow?
A: The best way is to use the search bar top right. You can also go to the "Friend" tab and go to the "Everyone" view.

This is probably a good stopping point for now. Add your "How Do I" and "How To" questions and we'll keep adding to the post.

  • In reply to Major Chu:

Hi Major, I just checked and it's set at 20Mb which makes for a fairly short video. It's definitely better to use freely available video services. I know there are issues with ones like YouTube not being available in China, but am hoping you have alternative ones to use.

  • In reply to Jim Cahill:
