Changing to Domain control after the fact

I have a Proplus and 3 workstations being delivered soon. I need these on site ASAP. However, the domain controllers are not coming for 3 weeks later... But we have commissioning and startup activities to begin. What would be the complications of starting things out as a workgroup and operating like that until i get the domain controllers delivered and setup, then switch it over. IDK if that affects the workstation configuration at all or if there are other headaches that would arise.

Thanks

  • I could not find any documentation from Emerson on changing workgroup to a domain environment after DeltaV is installed. Technically it is possible but you may encounter unknown issues since Emerson may have not tested this path.

To save you from headaches in the long run, better to wait for the IDDC or setup a temporary Independent DeltaV Domain Controller (IDDC). When the actual IDDC arrives join it to the domain network as a backup domain controller then transfer all the FSMOs to it so that it becomes the primary domain controller.

Attached is the IDDC white paper from Emerson.

  • Switching from workgroup to domain in a live system is difficult.

It would be easier to initially configure the ProPLUS as the domain controller, and then when the other servers arrive, configure them as additional domain controllers and move the primary role off of the ProPLUS. There is a KBA available about how to transfer domain controller roles- it used to be a necessary step when doing a live upgrade with hardware replacement.
