How to extract data from DVCH .xfc files?

We have recently installed a PI Data Historian which takes data from a DeltaV using OPC-DA. The customer would like us to backfill the PI historian with a few years worth of DeltaV Historian data. This data is held in .xfc files. Is there any way of extracting data in the format:  Tag, Value, Timestamp  into a text file without having to load it into the Deltav Continuous Historian?

Is the format of the .xfc file documented anywhere?

Thanks,

Kevin

  • Hi Kevin,

The best option here is to use the same instructions that Emerson has provided to do a DvCH -> ACH migration. Here you are doing a DvCH -> PI migration, but the good news is that the same instructions apply because the ACH uses the same technology as the PI server. You can get to the migration instructions by following the directions in the 'DeltaV Historian Upgrade Planning Guide' here: http://www2.emersonprocess.com/siteadmincenter/PM%20DeltaV%20Documents/Whitepapers/DV_COL_WP_HistorianUpgradePlanningGuide.pdf. Refer to section 2.2 and go to the heading "Migrate the DeltaV Continuous Historian to the Advanced Continuous Historian." You will have to access the source .PDF from the Guardian website so have your Guardian username and password ready.

Just FYI, if you had only a few days of data to migrate (e.g. much smaller amount), another option would be to use Excel as the transfer medium. You could export the data from DvCH using DeltaV Reporter (DeltaV Excel Add-in) and then import the data into PI using PI Manual Logger (OSIsoft Excel Add-in).

    Hopefully that helps.

    Brian

    Thanks Brian,

I don't have a Guardian account, but know a man who does, so I will follow up your suggestion.
