How to Setup ModBus Connection for DCS

Hello,

I would like to setup a DeltaV standalone computer at a PLC vendor location to test our DCS graphics and modbus connection.

We currently have DeltaV version 11.3 at the plantwide site. We have PLC contractor who will upgrade one of our PLC that with interface with our DeltaV system for controls via Modbus

Once the upgrade is complete, I would like to go the contractor facility to test the PLC program at a DeltaV station.

Here is the list of items I need to bring to vendor shop: (please help me with the list.)

1. DeltaV MD controller

2. Modbus serial interface card

3. DeltaV software

Am I missing anything else besides the DCS modules and graphics.

Thanks

  • You will need the ProfessionalPlus (ProPlus) for sure.

    Thank you for responding.

Our ProPlus is on a server in a server rack, so that will difficult to transport.

Can I install DeltaV software on my laptop?

    Thank you,

    And dongle and licenses

    Thank you Matt,

The dongle is attached to the ProPlus server. Can I remove it and use it with a new DeltaV license?

    Thanks,

Only if the new license is for that specific dongle ID, you won't be able to run two systems (Server Proplus and Laptop Proplus) with a single dongle and licenses which I think is what you are trying to do.

You might want to get an Emerson office or Local Business Partner involved with this because otherwise you will need to have a second system to be able to do want you want (unless you are in a shutdown).

I'm not sure what others have been doing but I have personally done something similar with skid vendors. The customer was paying us to go to the checkout of the skids so we were using our own dongles/licenses.

You can install DeltaV on a laptop. Move your dongle from the current Pro+ to your test Pro+. You won't need a "new" license, just download your current licenses from Guardian. When you fire up Explorer, it'll see your dongle and you can load the licenses. Then you can create a placeholder for your controller with I/O and assign the controller. Note that you won't be able to use the "current" DeltaV setup while the dongle is moved to the "test" DeltaV.

    Thank you Tracy,

If I remove the dongle from the Pro+, will my existing Pro+ (and other DeltaV Stations) still function normally?

Regarding the licenses, I can use my existing license for other DeltaV install on new machines? Will using my licenses on another new machine effect the existing licenses currently being used for normal operations?

I apologize in advance for simple questions.

    Thank you,

--Once you remove the dongle, the existing Pro+ will not function. However, when you put the dongle back, it will function normally. The other DeltaV stations will function fine EXCEPT for Pro workstations. They will not be able to configure.

Regarding the licenses, I can use my existing license for other DeltaV install on new machines?
--Yes, you can use the same license. Moving the dongle will activate it.

Will using my licenses on another new machine effect the existing licenses currently being used for normal operations?
--Yes, it will effect the existing licenses. Like I said above, the system you remove the dongle from will cease to function until you return the dongle. In reviewing the very first question you asked (the one that starts with "We currently have DeltaV version 11.3 at the plantwide site", I'm assuming that you have a production system dongle and not a development system dongle. If this is so, I BELIEVE (I could be wrong) that your existing system will function, but you just can't download and edit modules (things that you do with the Pro+). Therefore, I BELIEVE you can load DeltaV on a laptop, take the dongle, load licenses, run to test the Modbus connection, and run back and replace the dongle. If nobody wants to do any configuration changes, I BELIEVE it would work.

In addition to what you can physically do, you are bound by the software license agreement that ultimately dictates what you are legally entitled to do. I'm not a lawyer, and I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I'm not an expert on this. I'd say that if you have a functioning system and use the same Licenses to run a second system at the same time, you're likely in violation of the license agreement. I suggest having a discussion with your local Emerson Sales/Service provider to help you.

If the system is in development and will not be in service while the License is in use on another computer, this is typically done. But if the system is in production, I would not advise removing the dongle to operate a second system with the same licensing. Emerson provides Rental Development licensing for this type of activity, allowing you to purchase a time limited Pro Plus license for testing. Your local service provider may also be able to assist with temporary licensing of a test system.
