CutePDF with deltav 13.3.1 and server 2008R2

Hi everyone,

Wanted to reach out to group and ask if someone has used CutePDF application as a printer for Deltav system. I was trying to find a simple pdf printer that we could use and CutePDF gets the job done pretty decently till the time we are on windows desktop but having issues running it on operator stations on deltav desktop.

When Print is selected with CutePDF writer printer, it launches the CutePDF writer application but the application windows shows up on the windows desktop and cannot be accessed by operators.

I tried contacting GSC and see if they can help with having the CutePDF application run the deltav desktop but since this is an unsupported application, not much luck

So thought I will ask if someone has used the application and if so, what can we do so that window below is displayed on the deltav desktop when printing using the CutePDF writer (printer)

Appreciate any info

  • I know it is not PDF but have you tried Microsoft XPS Document Writer? It should work on Windows Server 2008R2.

And if you really need PDF, Adobe Abcrobat should work but it is not free.
  • The CutePDF save dialog will only appear on the Windows Desktop, not on the DeltaV Desktop. I've used it for years on our development systems with no issues but we've only used it on the Windows Desktop. Just remember it's not supported so if problems can be traced to it you won't get support until its removed.

Looking at the cutepdf.com FAQ pages it looks like the "Custom Edition" supports the Save As dialog bypass but costs $499. There's also some tips there about using other pdf converters like ghostwriter which, I've also previously used, that looks like it will allow a bypass of the dialog.

If all you are wanting to print is DeltaV graphics then there is a supported ScreenCapture.exe application. If you have Guardian you can look for KBA AP-0900-0135 for documentation and links to the appropriate version for your DeltaV version.

we do have the xps but one then needs pdf pro to open it , something that is currently used. the benefit with pdf was to be easily able to update it for gmp use like header/footer. The XPS viewer is something again not all had while pdf reader is more readily available

i agree it works great on windows desktop and the purpose here is not for graphics but for reporting from infobatch wherein a report can be printed from web interface launched from operate and saved to a shared network location

We know that any application not tested by Emerson is not supported but since you are willing to use CutePDF, can you use Foxit Reader instead? Foxit Reader installs a PDF print driver as well.

If Foxit is OK for you, you have to configure it for silent printing.

Steps to get it to work:

    1. Download and install Foxit Reader
    2. Using any application (Notepad), do File | Print
    3. In Print dialog, ensure Name is set to "Foxit Reader PDF Printer" and then click on Properties.
    4. In General | Target Folder change to distination location (e.g., \\PP\dvdata\pdf)
    5. In General | If File Exists: Add a numeric suffix
    6. Leave the rest using deault values

You should now be able to print from DeltaV Desktop and save the pdf into a shared location.

Again, this is not a supported setup Smiley... have fun.

My question is if the operators don't have access to the windows desktop, where are they saving the pdf's for later retrieval? Is it to a networked drive?
  • In reply to Youssef.El-Bahtimy:

It can be configured to save it to network location.
  • In reply to Youssef.El-Bahtimy:

yes, so others can access if required

I find BullZip PDF printer to be more configurable. It has a limit of 10 users and after that you have to license.
