Interested in a Virtual Book Club? Cast your vote and let us know if we should launch one...

Our group here in Austin reads 1+ book per quarter and we get together to discuss over lunch. Last quarter the discussion was so rich we thought, why not open this up to the World at Large (or at least, our EE365 Women in STEM readers). A FEW of the books on our list have included:

  • Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One, Jenny Blake
  • Hidden Figures, Margot Lee Shederly
  • Lab Girl, Hope Gahren
  • The Martian, Andy Weir
  • Carry On, Warrier: The Power of Embracing your Messy, Beautiful Life, Glennon Doyle Melton

We have an excellent facilitator in  who is willing to lead an online quarterly discussion in this group. Please give a thumbs up OR down in the poll below. Votes are anonymous. We will post the results and further details in the coming weeks...Stay tuned!

  • Hi - what was the last book you discussed?
  • Yikes! I edited the text of the poll and erased the existing votes. Prior to my flub, we had 8 votes for "Yes".

  • In reply to Martha Arjona:

Hi Martha Arjona, Last quarter we discussed 3 books (attendees had the option to read one or more):

    • The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance — What Women Should Know
    • Carry On, Warrior: The Power of Embracing Your Messy, Beautiful Life
    • Boundaries: When To Say Yes, How to Say No

For purposes of the Virtual Book Club, we will likely offer 2 titles iniatially (and 2 discussions at @30 minutes each).

  • It looks like there is enough interest to add a virtual aspect to the Book Club. Let's plan to discuss two selections here on EE365:
    • “Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race” by Margot Lee Shetterly
    • "Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One" by Jenny Blake

We'll host the Virtual Book Club on Wednesday, March 1, at noon CST.
  • In reply to jocelyn sexton:

Awesome! As a reminder, you can choose to read one or both selections. OR, simply tune in to learn more about them for your future reading list.

If everyone interested can please LIKE or comment on this post (since I erased the original 8 "Yes" votes") we will send out an Outook calendar reminder. Looking forward to the Pivot discussion, myself.

  • Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll and/or Liked our post to request an invitation to the Virtual Book club! The first 2 books have been chosen (Hidden Figures & Pivot) and our first meeting will be held on March 1st, at noon CST right here in the community. If you have not already, please like this post or respond to the poll in the thread above. We will send out calendar invites to those who have responded in the coming days...

I wanted to remind y’all of the upcoming Virtual Book Club and check-in to see if anyone had any questions or comments.

I’m in the midst of listening to Hidden Figures on Audible. And if I’m being completely honest… I’m pretty bored by it! 

The books is 10 hours and 47 minutes, and I have 4 hours and 38 minutes remaining (it says I’m on Chapter 13 of 25). But it is a struggle trying to get through it — it’s very dense with a LOT of names being talked about. I was expecting more of a “story,” and instead, I feel like I’m just getting a lot of information about a lot of different people. I hear the movie is great though… has anyone seen it? And if you’ve read the book — does it get better in the second half?

I look forward to chatting with everyone on EE365 next Wednesday.

I am reading Hidden Figures and I am having the same experience. More facts - not so much story telling. I am going to miss the call on Wednesday due to a customer event. :(
  • In reply to jocelyn sexton:

Glad I chose, Pivot. Admittedly, I'm playing catch up myself. 1/4 the way in and finding it inspiring and actionable. I look forward to moderating this part of the discussion next week. :)
