Dynamic Simulations for Projects, Training and Ongoing Operations

Emerson's Ronnie Bains

Learning in a simulated environment can improve both the capital project side and ongoing operations side of a manufacturing process. In an Arab News article, Faster start-up, Emerson’s Ronnie Bains:

…explains how the use of dynamic simulations and operator training systems can support engineering and workforce training to help bring offshore assets online quicker.

Bringing oil and gas processes online safely and quickly is the goal of every project team. Dynamic simulations can:

…be used throughout the lifecycle of a project, from an initial standalone process model built to perform verification studies of process and control system design, to commissioning and operating procedure verification, or “virtual commissioning,” and training, the traditional use of dynamic simulation.

Operator TrainingDuring initial design:

…the process model can be integrated with the control system configuration at various stages during the ICSS [integrated control and safety system] development. That allows it to be used as a tool to provide enhanced verification of the ICSS configuration, in addition to the traditional acceptance testing.

During commissioning:

…dynamic simulation can do “virtual commissioning,” where issues that would otherwise be highlighted during commissioning can be identified and addressed prior to commissioning.

For training before the process is up and running:

OTS [operator training solutions] enables operations personnel to gain experience in an offline, non-intrusive environment, and expose them to what they will experience in their actual control room. Operators learn about control and safety system operating concepts, while gaining experience of their actual process in preparation to effectively handle incidents, process upsets, and the management of abnormal situations.
