Alternative Energy Uncertainty

This week in the Wall Street Journal the article, Japan Alternative-Energy Investment Stalls, discusses Japan's foray into alternative energy. Despite needing more power because of their goal to stop using nuclear sources, investors are reluctant to participate in this industry because of an uncertain energy policy (Japan’s energy policy supposed to be unveiled later this year). Similar uncertainty regarding energy policy is occurring in other parts of the world and is also causing investment to wane.

Some other factors adding to the perceived risk profile of alternative energy sources include: recent bankruptcies; cheap natural gas; no clear technology winner; expensive alternative options when compared to conventional energy; etc.

What do you think can help spur investment and growth in alternative fuels and power?
