Optimizing Renewable Energy Asset Operations

As our energy grids continue to add more renewable sources, the complexity of managing these grids grows greater. In this 10:43 YouTube video, Ovation Green Renewable Asset Management and SCADA Software Technology Demonstration, Emerson’s Brett Benson demonstrates how the built-for-purpose Ovation Green asset management and SCADA software provides a unified view of renewable assets from a single pane of glass, helping to increase production and deliver low-cost clean energy.

Brett demonstrates five major areas of this software. These areas include functional, tree, visualization, key performance indicators (KPIs), and quick access to filters. He show navigation to different views including alarm displays, historical data, alarm analysis, reports, controls, and asset condition monitoring.

Back on the overview screen, Brett explains the asset summaries there. These summaries provide an overview of assets, allowing operators to easily identify their status through color codes (green, orange, red). Clicking on any individual asset takes you to a detailed display highlighting the cause of the issue. He drills into a wind turbine and shows the drive real-time data, alarm histories, and detailed descriptions on the alarms. Whether viewing the overview, history, or other displays, you can quickly access alarm data to quickly spot issues that require attention.

Brett also shares the capability to download all the parameters from an operating wind turbine and compare it with the parameters from another wind turbine. Parameters can be changed and uploaded back to the wind turbine controller to optimize operations. The condition monitoring portion of the software takes in data from all the sensors measuring rotors, gearboxes, bearings, lube systems, etc. and performs analytics processing to identify early indications of mechanical integrity issues.

He highlights the software key difference from other SCADA packages in that it manages not only the wind turbines, but also the battery storage and solar power generation assets and provides a single look-and-feel for the operators to manage.
