Sanjay Gupta, CEO of the Liberty Group stated in a BBC interveiw this morning their intentions to assess a possible rescue plan for Tatasteel UK operations.
Sanjay specifically highlighted one key point: the challenge of high energy costs.
Two main areas were specifically highlighted;
1. The existing Blast Furnace technology could be replaced for Electric Arc furnaces, alleviating the need for imported Iron ore. This should have a significant impact in transport costs and the possible use of renewable sources of energy.
2. The use of BIOMASS for the power plant that provides power and steam for site operations.
Emerson's Industrial Energy Team has since 2009 continued to bring impovements to the power and steam operations at the Power plant in Port Talbot and the TurboBlowerhouse in Scunthorpe, amongst two of Tatasteel's largest European assets.

BIOMASS also represents a challenge to efficient boiler operation due to the variable heat release of the feedstock. This is a challenge that our senior consultants identified some years ago due to the frustrations observed in increased instabilities and reduced efficiencies for boiler operations.
The team took to getting back to basics and designed a a new approach to combustion control that would eliminate the impact of variable calorfic fuels. The IP that culminated from this has and continues to deliver robust and energy efficient boiler operations across many industries.

So when a 3rd party organisation were assessing the most effective solutions for combustion contol they reveiwed a number of control strategies and considered the Emerson solution as one of the most effective in the industry.
