Roundtable Discussion on Midstream Industry Corrosion Challenges

The Golden Triangle of the northern Texas Gulf Coast is home to a sizable number of midstream and downstream petroleum processing and storage facilities. One of the Golden Triangle cities, Beaumont, is home to Lamar University. In 2019, Emerson and Lamar University established a partnership to:

…ensure the College of Engineering prepares its students with the latest digital transformation technologies and advanced process automation, instrumentation and control equipment now and in the future.

Lamar University’s Center for Midstream Management & Science, led by Thomas Kalb, will be hosting a November 10, 10-11am CST virtual roundtable discussion, Corrosion Issues in the Midstream Industry.

The roundtable features Emerson’s Dr. Christiane Lederer and other distinguished panelists from CorrPro-Aegion and Energy Transfer. They’ll share insights on system integrity issues facing the midstream industry.

I caught up with Christiane to get a preview of some of the areas that they will be discussing. She noted that technology has advanced in monitoring for corrosion and erosion. Devices are available to continuously monitor the wall thickness in pipes and vessels where corrosion is mostly likely to occur, such as in pipe bends.

Early notification of trouble spots enables advanced planning on the best way to address the issue before a loss of containment occurs. More than better planning, continuous corrosion and erosion monitoring technologies help to reduce personal and process safety risks.

Some of the topics the panelists are expected to discuss include primary causes of corrosion, traditional practices for corrosion detection and mitigation, inspection and integrity management, regulatory requirements, applicable standards such as API 580/581 Risk-Based Inspection, methods for monitoring pipeline wall thickness, and effectiveness of continuous monitoring solutions.

If you’re in the midstream industry or have challenges with corrosion and erosion, register for this virtual roundtable to gain insights from Christiane and her fellow panelists.
