FIELDVUE Instrumentation: Dabbling in Diagnostics

Let's take a layman's perspective on Valve/Instrument Performance Diagnostics: 

  • After a regular jog, a runner feels that his heart is palpitating and feels dizzy. He reaches down into his pocket and pulls out a cardiac monitoring device, the device detects a potential condition of coronary arteries blockage and advice the patient to seek immediate medical attention. This averted a possible case of cardiac arrest which could be life threatening.

  • In our FIELDVUE world, the same scenerio is played out in a different setting. A travel deviation alert is detected, plant operator runs a PD One-Button sweep while the process is on-line/in-service, a clogged I/P is suspected as the cause. The travel deviation is not deemed critical or significantly affecting process control. During the next shutdown, the DVC intrument was removed and a clogged I/P was confirmed as the source of the travel deviation due to dirty air supply. It was replaced and the supply line now has a 5 micron filter/regulator installed. This averted an unplanned shutdown and saves the plant thousands of dollars.
