Licensing Problem : DV 12.3 Sim Standalone w/ SIS

Win 7 Pro SP1 (Virtualized inside Oracle VirtualBox)

Hardlock key is passed into the virtual machine and recognized by both Win7 Pro and DeltaV software.

Licensing Properties

Node: Assigned License Features: # Configured:
System (Discrete Input Software: 0 DSTs) 1!
(Discrete Output Software: 0 DSTs) 1!
CTLR1
VIRTUALDV DeltaV Simulate with Basic SIS Simulation 0
Four Monitor Operator Workstation 1
DeltaV Simulate 0
Workstation Common Services  1

It appears as if I have to assign/configure the license for DV Sim but when I rightclick on the workstation and select Assign License, the window that opens has nothing to choose. Same when I select Unassign a License. When I selected CHECK it says all is good. Downloading the workstation is successful.

Now..

when I select Ctlr1 and check license I get this error.. ERROR: This node cannot be downloaded as the ProfessionalPlus Station has a DeltaV Simulate license. Assign/Unassign license are empty as they were with the workstation.

Is my licensing configured right at this point or have I missed something? Do I need to create a different controller type for simulate? And I also cannot commission CTLR1(it does not show under Decommissioned Nodes), but I suspect that is currently due to the license fault, is this thought correct?

  • If this shows twice either I didn't see where it went (looks like it should be in DV's Dis/Questions) or the post was held for moderator checks before being posted and they didn't catch this was a repost.
  • First you must import the license file, which can only imported when the correct dongle is recognized in your Virtual DeltaV machine.
Then the imported license can be assigned to the ProPlus node.
Having the simulation stand-alone license-and-dongle you may configure other controllers, but these cannot be commisioned nor downloaded. All configuration should be assigned and downloaded to the ProPlus.
For simulated SIS devices, you have to create placeholders which can be used in simulation.
    Good luck!

The report above is what I get after importing/loading the license file in DV Explorer with the compatible key attached to the system. But as said, when I attempt to assign a license to the workstation the dialog box that opens is empty. Where do I assign the DV Sim and/or DV Sim W/SIS to increase their counts to 1? I'm going to keep poking around the system and see if I can find out whats up.
  • In reply to Nova5:

You can drag/drop the license from Setup|Licenses to the Proplus.
On the Proplus properties from the licensing tab you can click License Details, where you shoeld see 'DeltaV Simulate' and 'DeltaV Simulate with Basis SIS Simulation'

I am attempting to run through the tutorial in the DV Books Online. The errors come up as I progress to the download point. Does the tutorial expect actual hardware to exist to use? or is there some way to configure it successfully in the simulate system that I have simply missed. I have set the controller type to SVirtual.

Thanks for sharing your insight & excellent trouble shooting accounts in the community over the holidays, . Very much appreciated during the stateside break. Cheers!

Rachelle, unfortunately I live in another part of the world than the US, and we still must work hard to earn our money ;-)
So no bigger deal than during other working days... :-()

Yes, this is the beauty of our humble, but GLOBAL community-- Rotating working hours & holidays! :)

During the courses lectured at Emerson, real hardware is used.
However, the output channels are directly connected to the inputs using copper wires.
So, when you follow the described course and short-circuit in software the (AO/AI) and (DO/DI) you have an exellent simulation equivalent to the course setup.

Do you have your license working now?
  • In reply to Maarten van der Waal:

Unfortunately I have made no headway with the licenses. While you know what you mean when you speak of setup|licenses. I have no clue but an poking around looking for it. I come from doing PLCs and HMIs. However I got the simulate through work an I am trying to learn it to better myself. I can place the modules intended for the controller into the Workstation's module section, but I cannot do the same with I/O. When I get properties of the workstation, go to the licensing tab, and click details I get the below. however DV Sim and Sim with SIS are still showing Zero.

DeltaV Simulate Standalone with Basic SIS Simulation
    Four Monitor Operator Workstation
    Workstation Common Services
    DeltaV Simulate
DeltaV Simulate with Basic SIS Simulation
  • In reply to Nova5:

Right, in DeltaV Explorer you see at least 2 main categories: Library and System Configuration.
When you expand System Configuration, you see at least Setup, Control Strategies and Physical Network.
When you expand Setup, you see at least Alarm Preferences, Security, Named Sets and Licenses.
When you click on Licenses, at the right hand pane you should see the License Bundle DeltaV Simulate Standalone with Basic SIS Simulation. This is the license you imported.

Now when you expand the Physical Network, you see at least Control Network.
When you expand Control Network, you see at least you ProPlus station, which I guess you called VIRTUALDV (I use to call it PROPLUS, but it does not matter here).

So when you drag and drop your license to the ProPlus station in DeltaV Explorer, you have your license up-and-running after a download of this ProPlus.

  • In reply to Maarten van der Waal:

Already assigned, but configured remains at Zero. Perhaps that's expected operation until its up and running.

1: ERROR: The software license bundle 'DeltaV Simulate Standalone with Basic SIS Simulation ' is already assigned to node 'VIRTUALDV'
2: ERROR: Unable to assign the software license bundle to node
3: ERROR: Unable to assign the software license bundle to node
  • In reply to Nova5:

If it is assigned, you cannot assign it again...
When you right click on VIRTUALDV, then on the General tab you see the object type. Is this 'ProfessionalPlus Station'?
When in Setup | Licenses do you see for your imported license as Node Assignment 'VIRTUALDV'?
If so, you should download your VIRTUALDV to get your license active.
  • In reply to Maarten van der Waal:

Nova5, Are you able to download the Professional Plus? If you can download the pro plus, the license has been applied. The Pro Plus is the only node that can be downloaded in a Simulate Standalone system. You can configure all other nodes, but you cannot download them.

You mentioned you could not assign IO to the Pro Plus. This is normal. The Workstation does not support IO. It does automatically handle your IO blocks such that it ignores the IO reference and does not flag the block as in error. You can set the IO Block to Simulate and drive the signal via the Simulate_IN parameter, either through a direct connection in the module diagram, or via an external reference. I often create a "Process Simulation" module that calculates the expected AI Value for a given AO signal and use external references so that the actual control module remains unmodified (except for setting the IO blocks to Simulate.

Let us know if you are able to download.

  • In reply to Maarten van der Waal:

I do see it assigned as a ProPlus Station on the workstation properties.
I didn't see a Node Assignment under Setup|Licenses until I changed the view to Details. Type is License Bundle, Node Assignment is VirtualDV.

Downloaded and overrode the errors about I/O. # configured for DV SIm and Sim with Basic SIS is still zero under Licensing Report. This machine was fully loaded and updated with Win7pro, no extra applications were installed before or after DeltaV. The virtual machine's only use is for DeltaV simulate. I also had downloaded the workstation prior to configuring any I/O, modules, etc. Both ProPlus Station and Setup Data.
