Enhancement ideas: Copper vs. fiber IOPs for the Charm I/O Card (CIOC)

DeltaV has long offered two types of IOPs for the CIOC: a copper version and a multimode fiber version.

There are also DeltaV Media Converters available that convert between copper and single-mode or multimode fiber.

I would like to understand if this offering is adequate or if a single-mode fiber IOP would be useful for the CIOC.

  • We haven't yet had the need for a single-mode IOP but could soon. We will be expanding our DeltaV system out to a remote building that has less than 96 IO. This building currently only has single-mode trunks.

More importantly, I would like to see the MTRJ connector on the fiber IOP replaced with a LC duplex connector. We have had several (6-8) of the MTRJ connectors pop apart and eject themselves from the IOP, possibly due to heat but still within Emerson specifications for the CIOC. Also the LC connector patch cords are much more readily available.
  • About 10-15% (approximately 25) of our CIOC's use fiber IOP's. We have had to install multi-mode fiber specifically for these applications. In some cases, we already had single mode in place. It would be nice to have a supported single mode option avaible.

I do not use media converters. Historically, they are not reliable over time and cause too many issues.

I also agree with Scott that the MTRJ connector is a poor design. It is generally obsolete in industry and has been replaced by other connection types. The patch cords are difficult to get with long lead times. I would also much prefer LC connectors. We are installing a new fiber CIOC this week in one of our buildings and just discussed these exact topics yesterday.

I think that both multi-mode and single mode fiber needs should be available. Most of industry is moving to single mode for new installations. The only new multi-mode installs I have done in the last five years has been to support new CIOC installations. Emerson should also strongly consider changing fiber connections from MTRJ to LC.
