Decommission and recommission RM100 Smart Switches?

Hi,

First of all, bundle of thanks for answering my existing queries.

We have 6 DeltaV Smart Switches RM100 but 3 failed as shown in Network Device Command Center:

  • 3 for Primary network (2 failed on NDCC but no active physical alarm on LED status)
  • 3 for secondary network (1 failed on NDCC but no active physical alarm on LED status)

I'm afraid these 3 failed switches are properly commissioned. So how to decommission and recommission again?

  • This same failure just occurred at my site. Two switches stopped communicating over fiber. No alarms on the switch. Did you resolve this and what was your solution?
  • If you cannot access the switches from NDCC, which I believe is your case, then you will need to reset the switches using a serial cable connected to the v.24 console port. After that, NDCC you show these switches as decommissioned, and you will have options to recommission them using existing configuration or commission them as new.

What is the resetting procedure? Apart from cable, is any software or configuration file needed?
Can I reset these switches when the plant is live?
Right now switches are working/communicating with the network but showing failed on NDCC.

Switches are communicating with the network, in fact, no alarm led ON on the switches themselves but failed status on NDCC.

Did you ever get this working? I am experiencing the same issue and the global service center hasnt been much help as of yet.
  • I am having a similar issue with an FP20 switch and am unable to decommission. I am using a USB to RS422/485 converter and a breakout board to male RJ11 connector (referencing Books Online for wiring). I cannot get the CLI to communicate.

I use Putty terminal emulator on my PC with USB converter. I have to check which comm port the usb converter is using and set that in the Putty connection before the CLI terminal session can communicate.

From Device Manager, I check to see the COM# used by the USB Converter

Putty is a freeware terminal emulator.

  • KBA AK-1000-0014 has all the information you need to build the correct v.24 terminal cable as well as the steps to reset or update legacy DeltaV Smart Switches (FP20, RM100, etc.)

For NextGen Smart Switches, you will need to check their Getting Start Guide, which I believe is also included in Books-OnLine.

  • I once encountered a situation where the RM100 fiber - optic communication was abnormal. Finally, it was found that the problem was that the optical module used was not compatible with the RM100, and there was a difference between 100 - megabit and 1000 - megabit .This may not be closely related to your question. I'm just sharing the problems I've encountered with the RM100.

    Thanks Andre,

It turns out my issue was that I was had my wires crossed... I got pins 1-6 on the RJ11 flipped, and it worked fine once I corrected the issue.

Coincidentally, we are experiencing more issues with network switch commissioning. This time with an RM200. When using NDCC to commission the switch, the created module used the default values from the control module class (for parameters such as LOC_DECRIPTION, MGINFO, MGMT_IP_ADDR) and immediately loses communications to the switch in NDCC (control communications to CIOCs/Controllers are fine). We are running 14.3.1 build 7288, but have not noticed this behavior until maybe the past 6 months or so (facility has been running since 2020 without this happening).

It seems like we will have to reset the switches locally with a console cable again..

    Hi Andre,

Are you aware of a CLI command for the RM200 switches that is similar to "DeltaV default" for the FP20?

The RM200 responds with invalid command in CLI.

    Thanks,

Update: found that for RM200 the relative command is first "enable" then "factory config"

  • In reply to Jim K:

I discovered the same thing recently with a new FP40 switch.  No DeltaV Default menu.  Got some help from one of our Network Engineers to configure the Mirrored port.

I've since learned that there is a Web interface on the new switches that is supposed to provide an easier UI for configuring the switches.  I have not explored this, but it would make sense to use that rather than build a customized CLI menu.

So there is more there than just Upgrading the switch.  I'll have to investigate this a bit more, but clearly much more useful than CLI.  There is still the full CLI switch commands in the switches, just no longer has the DeltaV set of settings.

You can set the Port mirroring here and much more.

Jim, there was a hotfix in v14 that provided a new Smart Switch Module Class. On my v15FP2, I had similar issue where the smart switch module was created, but failed to communicate with the switch. solution was to import that new Class. It is provided in a KBA. Don't have the number at my finger tips at the moment.
