DeltaV has stopped working

Hi everyone, I need help/advice on what to do. I had a problem with Pro Plus. 
Services suddenly stopped and wouldn't start for a while (Operation Run, Explorer, Trends, Administration). 

"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the programm."

At the time, I had no similar problems on terminal servers or workstations. I was having trouble downloading files, and the download kept getting interrupted. 

"error code 4, OSS_TIMEOUT"

All network connections are OK


After closing all open services and a few hours later, everything started working again (the download option appeared earlier).

1410S Smart Wireless Gateway WebUI

Hi All, we are trying to connect a 1410S (Not DeltaV Ready Gateway) smart wireless gateway to our DeltaV Primary Network. I have preconfigured the network settings but the webUI is not accessible from my Deltav Engineering Workstation. I have checked the DeltaV Firewall and there's no rule blocking it and also Smart Switch are unlocked.

For sure I am missing something. Can you give me some guidelines on how I can access the WebUI from a DeltaV Workstation?

Ahh found the culprit. I added a new ruleset on all DeltaV Controller firewalls to allow TCP port 443.

A follow-up question came up regarding redundancy switchover. We are able to do a forced switchover but cannot switchover within diagnostics with the Proplus connected to the primary port. Diagnostics shows bad redundancy due to no primary ACN communication, but always and only the standby controller. When a forced switchover is done the bad communication is always with whichever controller is the standby. The Active controller primary connection remains healthy. Is this expected behavior for a standby SIS architecture in V12? Will v15 make it possible to switchover within diagnostics?

Is there any information on how to connect the temporary Proplus to the Primary Modbus port IP address? We are unable to find any specific information in BOL or Guardian. It obviously connected years ago when the system was first deployed because the SZ controllers were commissioned at that time. The temporary Proplus IP address is set to 10.4.0.6, 255.255.2.0. The Modbus address is set to 167.151.x.x, 255.255.255.0. The system still is V12. Should it still be possible to connect the temporary Proplus to the Primary port since the Modbus address was changed. In v12 there is no way to set the primary and secondary Modbus port separately. An upgrade to 15 is being considered. Is the connection method different with v13 and up?

Yes, this is a proven architecture. Both ACN DeltaV traffic and ModbusTCP traffic co-exist on the same physical port.

The ACN RJ45 ports of the SZ controller also serve as the Modbus ports by design. The SZ ethernet ports are configured with two IP addresses on different subnet masks. A switch will locate the connected ports for the Pro Plus and ModbusTCP client and communications will be passed accordingly. Depending on your cybersecurity risk tolerance and network design, you may choose to add a firewall to limit traffic flow, including keeping DeltaV ACN traffic on the DeltaV SIS side, and allow only valid ModbusTCP traffic between the SZ and the Client.

As of v13, the Modbus TCP connection can be redundant, with primary defined typically to align with DeltaV ACN usage, that is primary network on the left, Secondary on the right.

I found a DeltaV SIS Standalone Whitepaper dated June 2020. The existing Standalone SIS system has been running for nearly 10 years. The issue has been that Modbus communication connected to the secondary ACN/Modbus port frequently locks up and that data goes stale. A redundancy switchover has been the recovery work around. The Proplus is a Toughbook laptop and may be temporarily connected to the Primary port for configuration, commissioning, flashing, downloading, etc. In V12 Modbus on SZ controller was simplex and must be connected to the secondary port. It is my understanding that Modbus ports are redundant since v13. We are trying to find out if the Standalone SIS with the redundant Modbus communication in v15 is a proven architecture. The white paper shows the top ports of the isolated ethernet parts are Redundant Modbus/TCP. In BOL show them as both ACN and Modbus. Hopefully this information helps to clarify my question - Can both Modbus ports be enabled for redundant Modbus while still being able to connect the Proplus? Or should only the secondary Modbus port be enabled for a Standalone SIS node, thus negating any opportunity to utilize the Modbus redundancy feature in the later versions?

I haven't tried this setup. Typically, if this is not publish on BOL or KBA, this is not supported. Why do you want to connect your old Proplus to the MODBUS network if i may ask?

DeltaV Reporter Configuration

I a, using DeltaV 10.3.5 and installed MIcrosoft Excel 2007 in my ProPlus station. I want to configure DeltaV reporter to generate a daily report automatically, of Historical data, Alarms and Events of some specific Tag at a specific time of the day.

Please guide me step by step how to do that or share me any relevant document if available.

String manipulation

Hello, what can you do with strings in DeltaV? I know you can concatenate 2 strings with the operator + but besides that can you do anithing else? can you look for a string inside another string? can you remove part of a string?

The reasoning lies somewhere in the fact that controllers deal with machine level stuff and the HMI deals with Humans, and that pesky language thing that is so illogical.... There is a long history starting with the original OS used on controllers and how strings affected memory fragmentation. Back in the day, handling strings in the controller was not the chosen path. Named Sets convert integers to strings and Alarm types provide alarm messages that are stored at the workstations rather than the controllers. But handling and parsing strings and arrays and such was not in the cards early on, and that has stuck,

Another challenge with strings is passing them via Modbus as ASCII characters. DeltaV does not have an ASCII format so these are passed simply as integers where a 16 bit integer holds two 8byte characters. We created a Composite block that reads a number of integers into an Array. The Block contains a second composite that contains 255 string parameters that are named by their ASCII "position" from CHR0 to CHR255. (ie. CHR65 holds the character "A".) The main composite contains a set of dynamic reference parameters called ASCII_1 to say ASCII_16. A Calc block parses the array to read each ASCII value and sets the $REF feild of of the ASCII_x parameter, pointing to the CHR# in the composite. Finally, the CALC block concatenates the .CV value of the dynamic references into a string, once the references are defined (.CST =1). We just check the first Character. If the text is shorter than the allotted parameters, the extra are all defined to a blank. The string is always the same size.

We can add more ASCII_X fields to handle longer strings, or add several composites to handle substrings that are then concatenated into a longer string.

This is not efficient, but works. Note: The array is a Float Array, so it will handle an unsigned 16 bit integer holdiing register accurately. Going the other way is much harder and we don't do in the controller. We usually see this for limited text information.

String values don't change frequently, so this solution should be triggered to run on a change flag or periodically.

Couple of things I'd like to see are:
1. Integer Array: A float array cannot represent a 32 bit integer accurately. Being able to store and retrieve 32bit values would be useful, including an array of Time values from a DTE block
2. A string call that would be able to read an LDT of ASCII characters as a String. A compiled function would be much more efficient that clever Composites.
3. Find in String and Split functions would also be quite useful.

With the new OS in all our controllers, the issues with strings should be easier to deal with.

Within the controller your options of string manipulation are severely limited...

Numbers will be default to what they have when converted to a string unless you do either of the below:

Integer (remove decimals - first just takes the decimals off and the second will convert float to integer)

'^/STR_NUM.CV' := "My float to integer is " + TRUNC('^/NUM_PARAM.CV');

'^/STR_NUM.CV' := "My float to integer is " + TRUNC(ROUND('^/NUM_PARAM.CV'));

FP specific decimals

DECIMAL1 := 2;
POWER1:= EXPT(10,DECIMAL1);
'^/STR_NUM.CV' := "My float to 2 decimals is " + ((ROUND('^/NUM_PARAM.CV' * POWER1)) / POWER1);

At the HMI, you have lots of string manipulation that can be done and only limited to VBA (Operate) or Java/TypeScript (DeltaV Live).

We have a remote desktop with 6 sessions out of which 5 are with Visitor rights and one with admin rights.

Can anyone suggest how to restrict access to only the admin right session for some users?

Senthilkrishnan, I forgot to mention that each Remote Client is licensed, typically with View Only Client license. This license also plays a role in restricting the ability to make runtime changes to DeltaV parameters, even if the User and workstation have assigned Plant areas. View Only License does not provide access to Process History View. This can be added to a view only license station, or you can build Displays with embedded Trends that can provide some viewing of History. The View only license is an added restriction on user privileges in DeltaV.

What are your thoughts about using a Web connection versus an RDP connection for view only?

A Web Server connection removes the need for maintain local DeltaV Users for access and the need to maintain Remote Client connections/licenses for view only users. It also removes the need to provide network access to the DeltaV Remote Client through your Enterprise networks/firewalls and the use of gateway servers. From a Cybersecurity perspective. the Web Server architecture closes some attach vectors including Phishing and other social engineered attacks.

DeltaV Mobile provides a Web Portal with tools to convert Operate displays to web pages. For Live displays, Emerson pivoting to the Edge server environment. Hopefully we will see this at Exchange this May, but I don't know.

If you were to have a Web server for your view only users, what functionality of the DeltaV HMI would they need? How do your current users make use of the Remote Clients. What would be the No Go conditions (i.e. lacking functionality) that would make a Web server interface untenable for your users?

With View Only Remote Clients,
- the users do not see any alarms in the Alarm Banner or Alarm Lists.
- Faceplates and Detail faceplates function.
- History View is an added license to the View Only license
- Displays are fully functional in their native environment.

DeltaV Mobile Web Portal:
- Converted HTML web page provides comparable view of source display
- Faceplates and Detail faceplates are not accessible
- History is only visible through Embedded Trend object
- Navigation and custom scripted functions are not converted.
- only converted displays are accessible.

Since Live displays are already HTML5 based web pages, we anticipate a richer experience with Live on the Edge environment. But I'm curious why more customers did not embrace the DeltaV Mobile Web Portal and what functionality are they wanting for their view only users.

The rights of a session are based on the assigned areas of that session and the locks assigned to the users in DeltaV user manager. Each Client Session has an Alarms and Events container to which you would assign plant areas. If there are no plant areas assigned, the User on that session has no write privileges to any modules and is effectively a read only user. If the session has a span of control in terms of assigned plant areas, then the Logged on User's rights come into play for what they can change, if anything. Both the session and the User must have rights to a Plant area for online writes to be permitted.

Since the User is defined in DeltaV as a DeltaV user, they are granted access to applications available to the Windows Groups they belong to, mainly DeltaV Group. This gives them windows access to launch a program like DeltaV Explorer. Their DeltaV user rights will limit what they can do in that program.

For DeltaV Visitors, these users would be view only and there DeltaV keys would be limited. They can launch only the programs Windows security grants them access to by the DeltaV Group and associated policies. Once in a program, the end up with view only rights. Not assigning plant areas to the session makes the session view only from a runtime perspective.

Yes, it is on DeltaV.

If we add the user here, I can see that the specific Session shows < Not Available> for all other users. This solves my problem. Thank you.

But still, I couldn't understand how only one session was providing the Users with their original access rights, while other sessions were only having visitor rights even though the same user was logging in to these sessions.

Do you have any idea how & where this restriction of one client session having more rights than another is configured in DeltaV ??

Since this is in the Services section, I am assuming DeltaV, but it doesn't appear that your post specifies which control system. That being said, if it is DeltaV, if you right click on the session and choose properties, there is a reserved for user list you can use.

Let me know if this helps at all. If you were asking about another control system, please specify and maybe one of the other experts can help you.

Emerson Fisher DPC2K HART DD launch time?

The Emerson DPC2K supports HART FSK; however, it appears the DD has not yet been issued.

Does anyone know the progress or an estimated timeline for when the DD will be available, specifically for WirelessHART THUM applications?

DeltaV Operate closes immediately after opening

Good afternoon everyone,

I have a problem with DeltaV Operate. I installed DeltaV 14.3.1 FP1 on a new workstation to be an "Oper-station" (Precison 5860), but when I try to open Operate (run or config mode), it closes before the loading percentage bar appears and does not display any errors.

I have already installed several DeltaV workstations, but this problem has never occurred. Have you ever encountered this?

Note: The entire DeltaV installation went perfectly well, without any errors, and I have already tried reinstalling DeltaV and the problem persists.

We are currently experiencing high-frequency noise in the range of 2 kHz to 20 kHz, which is causing interference and resulting in DeltaV AO IMAN and HART communication errors. Additionally, AMS is unable to detect the instruments.

Could you please assist us in resolving this issue?

The HART channels have the HART_ERRORS parameters that pass HART status information to the channel status. When HART communications are lost, this can cause the IO CHANNEL to indicate Bad Status and that drives the AO to IMAN.

You can set the channels to ignore HART status. That does not solve the loss of HART due to noise, but could mitigate the consequence to control.

I don't see an attached file so I'm not sure how you connected the 250 ohm resistor and what signal this was done on. If put in series with a DVC, I expect the added loop resistance increases the HART signal amplitude above the noise so that it is seen by the AO channel.

Thank you for your advice.

We understand that the noise originates from the VFD and that it can disrupt HART communication.

However, we are trying to understand why this noise also affects IMan, causing the DCS to lose control.

While it is acceptable for AMS/DM to be affected, the impact on IMan is a major concern, especially since the noise in question is only around 15 kHz.

This has led the customer to question whether DeltaV has sufficient resistance to noise interference.

Do you have any solutions to address this issue besides adding a 250-ohm resistor?

As shown in the attached file, adding the resistor seems to restore the HART waveform, though we are not certain why it works.

Unfortunately, using ferrite beads has not been effective in resolving the issue.

Your insights and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
