Pilot-supply Regulators - Underutilized performance boosters

Pilot-supply regulators can be an invaluable tool for achieving optimum performance out a pilot-operated regulator. It improves accuracy by essentially eliminating inlet sensitivity, increases stability by reducing gain, and improves closing speed-of-response.

Pilot-supply regulators are direct-operated regulators installed in front of the pilot to reduce the supply pressure to the pilot. They must be rated for the inlet pressure and should flow as much as the pilot to avoid interfering with the pilot’s performance.

To ensure that the main valve is able to fully open, the pilot-supply regulator should be set slightly above the minimum differential pressure plus outlet pressure setting.
