Replacing DVC6010 with 3582

Dear Sir,

We have a few DVC 6010 installed on steam valves. Due to high temperature, electronics of the DVCs get cooked resulting in shutdown. We have two options. Either go for remote mounted positioner or replace with a pneumatic positioner with I/P mounted separately. I am more inclined towards pneumatic positioner with remote I/P. Is 3582 a good replacement for DVC 6010. Will I have to make any mounting changes? If this is not a good replacement, which model would you suggest?

Thanks and regards

  • My inclination would be to suggest you go with a DVC6200 remote mount option. The DVC6200 is a later model to the DVC6010 you have, the key difefrence being that it has a linkage less feedback system that would also help you in case of vibration issues on the line. As you have already indicated the remote mount option will enable you to move the main electronics away from the highest temperature area. We have many remote mount units installed in power stations to combat the high temperatures seen on steam lines. You would need an updated mounting kit whichever option you choose I'm afraid. Would you like some more information on this?

Thanks a lot for your reply. I was incluned towards pneumatic since I have seen many steam valves with pneumatic positioners. However, since you have suggested remote mount, can you please give some more details about the modifications I will need to do.
    Thanks

Dear Asif, if you could please provide your site location, we can have local technical support to assist you to resolve your current issues. Is this application in Furnace area? We have recently installed DVC6200 remote mount for customer site in Saudi Arabia in furnace area, where high temperature after 8 years of installation was causing issues due to cracked heat insulations.

Dear Riyaz, Thanks for your comment. I am in KSA and we are contacting local Emerson support. The installation is not in a furnace but on a steam service valve where heat radiation affects the positioner. I would appreciate if you could clarify the preference of a remote mount over a pneumatic positioner. I have seen numerous installations of pneumatic positioners for steam service valves working successfully.
I belive one reason could be access to diagnostics. Is there any other advantage as well?

    Dear Asif,
Apart from auto calibration, configuration and other benefits, Smart digital valve controllers provide better performance than conventional positioner. Also being communicating type these devices provide diagnostics of complete control valves, which can be helpful in troubleshooting before valve becomes inoperative. I will have one of our technical expert in KSA contact you. Would it be possible send me your details on riyaz.ali@emerson.com to assist your promptly. We have offices in Al-Khobar, Jubail, Jeddah, Riyadh and Yanbu.
