Discrete Valve Controller for Emergency Shutdown Applications

Emerson’s Austin Craft demonstrated the TopWorx for Emergency Shutdown valves which incorporates the HART 7 communications protocol during the Emerson Exchange Americas Virtual Series.

TopWorx discrete valve controllerThe TopWorx DXP, a part of the D-Series discrete valve controllers, enable automated on/off valves to communicate via HART 7 and other digital communications protocols. It attaches to all rotary and linear valves and actuators, operates in the most demanding environmental conditions, and carries a variety of hazardous area certifications.

These discrete valve controllers carry IECEx, ATEX, and UL certifications in a single model, making it easier for manufacturers and producers to standardize across plants in multiple world areas. Other certifications currently available include NEPSI, KOSHA, InMetro, and EAC.

He opened the unit to show the HART 7 communications board. It includes a terminal board to connect to the shutdown valve, pressure transmitters and switches. It has integrated solenoid valves in the unit.

GO Switch sensors provide discrete position sensing of the valve if opened or close.

Austin showed the configuration screen inside the unit and buttons to configure the device. Some functions include valve position indication, full-stroke valve calibration, partial-stroke calibration, partial-stroke test initiation, SOV performance testing, and fail-safe open or close setting. These tests can also be performed remotely through the HART 7 communications.

The display also shows any alerts that may be present. He also demonstrated remote access to the configuration, testing and alert information.

These D-Series controllers are designed to perform in wet, hot, cold, dirty, abusive, corrosive, explosive, and/or capability with hundreds of chemical compounds.
