Thermowell material suitable for Sodium Hypochlorite

Hi

Can you please confirm me the most suitable material for the thermowell 114C that can be used with Sodium Hypochlorite solution? The existing one is Hastelloy C-276 which is failing. I read on one of the internet source that Hastelloy should never be used as its Nickel decomposes Sodium Hypochlorite. What should be the right material then?

Regards

  • Shaiq Bashir, thermowell material specification is something we cannot do due to liability issues, but I can make some suggestions. Sodium hypochlorite solution can have varying concentrations and at different temperatures its properties change. After some research it looks like most thermowell materials stand no chance against that solution. Alloy C-276 is rated as OK for low concentrations what I see as a possible solution is Alloy C-276 with PTFE coating. PTFE coating is generally used for its nonstick properties, but we've had customers in the past that have used it for its chemical resistant properties. I currently don't have that option available on the 114 thermowell portfolio but if interested it is something I can work on getting added. We also have our X-Well non intrusive technology that removes the need to use a thermowell in the pipe this can be an alternative solution .
