A look at DP transmitters that can stand up to the toughest high-pressure applications

The difference between Rosemount and Existing High Presure TransmittersProcess industries are moving to applications that require measuring higher pressures than ever before. As drilling technology improves, the oil and gas industry is going after deeper and more extreme fields onshore, offshore and subsea. Shale and tight gas operations requiring enhanced oil recovery methods exist on every continent. These more challenging fields and methods often operate beyond the pressure limits of conventional pressure instrumentation. Standard differential pressure instrumentation has traditionally been capable of operating under maximum working pressures of 6,100 psi, with specials extending this pressure up to 10,000 psi. New demands reach 15,000 psi and above. In the gage and absolute pressure marketplace, instruments have traditionally only provided pressure measurements up to 10,000 psi while today’s users require 20,000 psi or more. To add further challenges, the high pressure operations may be remote and the environment and process materials themselves highly corrosive.

Clearly, high pressure applications are challenging, but these installations can’t be treated as outliers or special cases as some manufacturers do. These applications need all the advanced features of low pressure installations and then some. In fact, many installations need both low pressure and high pressure devices operating in the same area.

For many years, Emerson has advanced the market in pressure instrumentation technology, and it’s pioneered wireless technology for pressure installations, reducing costs by as much as 60% and allowing WirelessHART® communications from even the most remote locations. Emerson pressure instruments provide SIL 3 Capable Safety certifications, advanced diagnostics that save money on maintenance and prevent costly shutdowns, and an easy-to-use interface that makes operation simple and consistent.

The challenge was to provide all these features scalable to high pressure applications. Fortunately, the design of Rosemount™ pressure transmitters enable extension to even more challenging applications because it offers the following capabilities:

  • Digital bus output enabled scalable architecture with HART, Fieldbus, Wireless, and advanced functionality
  • Hermetic glass seal that protects sensor and electronics – essential in high pressure applications with corrosive environments
  • All-welded hermetic module housing
  • Fast dynamic response technology
  • Dual-capacitance sensor enhances performances and provides diagnostics
  • Coplanar module that reduces weight, complexity and potential leak points
  • Robust autoclave connection that provides reliable measurement to 20,000 psi

Scaling these robust features has enabled new solutions in demanding high pressure applications. First is the Rosemount 3051SHP High Pressure transmitter for DP applications. Next, for gage applications, the new Rosemount 3051T Range 6 is the most capable high pressure transmitter in the world, providing measurement up to 20,000 psi with +/- 0.075% span accuracy and no compromise in functionality or capability.

The Rosemount 3051T Range 6 is already being deployed to offshore platforms, measuring the extremely high pressures at the production header, choke valve, wellhead, annulus, injection lines, and wash water system. It’s also in hydrogen re-fueling stations, employing gold-plated SST isolators, and on oil and gas wells in Argentina where they are wirelessly connected. Optional remote seals on the 3051T isolate the transmitter from the process, protecting it from corrosive environments, vibration, high pressure and high temperature process fluids, and other harsh process conditions.

By raising innovation to new heights, Emerson has taken reliable pressure monitoring to new depths and allowed users to solve high pressure application challenges without the need for retraining, and without compromising advanced communications, accuracy, or diagnostic capabilities.
