Safeguarding Against Tank Overfills

Emerson's Christoffer Widahl

When storage tanks overflow they can create safety hazards, environmental issues, facility damage and reputation loss. It is critical to have an effective overfill prevention strategy.

In this quick, 2:34 video, Overfill prevention solutions help safeguard operations, Emerson’s Ulf Johannesson and Christoffer Widahl describe how an effective overfill prevention solution helps process manufacturers and producers to meet regulatory demands and to safeguard operations, health and the environment.

Ulf and Christoffer describe the importance of safety integrity level (SIL) certification for the level measurement devices to be used in the safety instrumented functions used to prevent overfill conditions. SIL-certified measurement devices include a Rosemount 2140 SIS vibrating fork level switch provides a point solution for high level alarms and includes extensive HART digital diagnostics and remote proof test capabilities.

Ulf described the Rosemount 5900S radar level gauge as being suitable for in safety applications up to SIL 3. It has a 2-in-1 capability which includes two radar gauges in one housing for independent level and overfill measurement. It is SIL 2 and SIL 3 certified according to the international IEC 61508 safety standard and enables API 2350-compliant solutions.
