Oil and gas pipelines often run across great distances and at times through remote locations; 2,175,000 miles of pipeline in 120 countries around the world. Monitoring those lines for internal corrosion is a considerable – but necessary – task, knowing that internal corrosion is one of the main cause of incidents and that the majority of the pipelines are over 20 years old.
Today, up to 70% of pipeline inspections for leaks are done visually, but that doesn’t give any indication of the metal loss rate that might be happening inside the pipe nor its morphology, it merely shows that metal loss hasn’t gone too far and caused a leak. This is where non-intrusive area monitoring based on the Field Signature Method (FSM) is a valuable tool to enhance pipeline integrity management programs, help avoid operating expenses related to excessive in-line inspection and reduce capital expenditure related to late maintenance.
FSM technology is based on feeding an electrical current through a monitored section of pipe, pipeline or vessel. The applied current sets up an electrical field that is monitored as voltage drop values between a set of sensing pins installed on the external pipe wall. These values are then converted into easy-to-understand corrosion information.
