The Greener Future of Hydrogen Production – with Edge Control and Innovative PLC/PAC Technologies

Producing economical hydrogen is an imperative today. Automation designers are looking for modular and scalable automation solutions to support safe and smart hydrogen production and handling. In the past, PLCs and HMIs were employed to automate equipment, with DCS used for large-scale petrochemical and refinery operations. Today, however, edge control and innovative HMI/SCADA platforms are used in place of traditional control. Hydrogen producers attain reliability, security and accessibility with newer architecture and edge capabilities.

Because hydrogen plays such an important role in future green energy for the world, it’s important that hydrogen production be a part of the solution rather than contributing to the problem. By using hardware and software with built-in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) capabilities, designers develop modular, scalable solutions for safe and smart operation in every step of hydrogen production and handling – moving grey hydrogen production to blue production, and even, in many cases, to green production.

In a recent article in Oil & Gas Engineering, Emerson’s Denka Wangdi discusses both the opportunities and challenges of modernizing and automating hydrogen production – read it here.
