Adding a new VIM2 Module online.

I have a two-wide controller c/w PS in place next to one of my MQ controllers and am wondering if I can physically insert a VIM2 card without knocking out the controller? The process is operating so it's not an option to take down the controller. Thanks.

  • I'm assuming your empty 2-wide is on the left of the controller. If so, there should be no problem. You will need to either connect directly to the VIM or to the switch the VIM is connected to in order to configure it but this will not effect the controller. Only after you set up the virtual serial cards will you need to download anything in DeltaV.

NOTE: after you have configured the VIM and DeltaV, if you ever change the VIM configuration and re-upload it will cause a communications interruption and probably an alarm for one scan.

Thanks. Yes, the VIM placement is correct. I've configured the unit as well using a spare controller. When I physically plug it in, it's going to create virtual serial cards 57-60 automatically so I wasn't sure if this might cause a bump on the controller.

the VIM 2-wide carrier can be to the left or right of the controller, and must be before the first IO carrier. The Pk controller only has a right side connector and so the VIM must be between the controller and IO carrier.

A VIM solution for VerticalPlus carriers used extender cables to place the VIM between M-series controllers and the first Vertical carrier.

When adding a VIM to an existing controller, it is always added to the left of the controller so as not to require an outage. In your case, left side it is.
