EIOC / Ethernet with PRP switches for MCC

Hi

I have a redundant EIOC to communicate to  MCC non redundant devices using star architecture.

According to Emerson, Hirschman RED25 (4 ports) switches have been tested successfully as Redbox, has anybody used other brand that can be recommended to be used as Redbox?

(I saw Stratix 5400, Cisco IE4300, Moxa PT7728, and others that have PRP protocols...)

Thanks

  • I have successfully implemented PRP with Stratix 5400 and Cisco IE-4010 (both in the same network). Be sure to follow all the directions and example architectures, and test it very thoroughly.

A couple of gotchas to watch for:

    1. I found with the Stratix and Cisco switches - where your LAN A and LAN B connect to a RedBox if the ports happen to negotiate to different speed / duplex (e.g. one negotiates to 100 Mbps and one to 1000 Mbps), the switch disables the entire PRP channel! I don't know who thought that was a good idea for a redundancy protocol. Best practice would be to force the speed and duplex at both ends of any PRP link to a RedBox.

    2. Only certain ports on the switches generally support PRP - often they are the SFP ports. Be sure to plan accordingly- it often means buying copper SFPs even though you may have lots of available copper ports on the switch already.

    Hope that helps.

  • Phoenix Contact have 2 PRP modules, 1 with RJ45 A/B ports and the other with SFP A/B Ports
  • Hey Caio,

I don't have an answer for your question, but was curious about the reason for your question.

Is the search for an alternative related to costs, availability, performance, or compatibility of the Hirschman switches?

    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi Michael,

I'm about to select the MCC switches (20 switches@24 ports, Redbox) and the only information I found is that Emerson has successfully tested the RED25. As Hirschman only has 8 ports Redboxes I'm looking for other options to reduce the number of switches.
I assume all "PRP" switches are compatibles but, as Tom mentioned, there all always some "gotchas" to consider, that's why I'm looking for other's experiences in performance, compatibility and ease of use.

    Have a good day!
    Caio.

  • Hello to all experienced PRP-users.

Has anybody installed a PRP-ring, using HSR (IEC 62439)?
