Alarm Shelving from Alarm List

Is it possible within the AlarmList object to limit which Alarm Functional Classifications an operator is allowed to shelve?  I would like the AlarmList to show the operator all the alarms in his process but he could not shelve an alarm with a Functional Classification of Safety.  I have other ways that those alarms could be shelved that are consistent with our Alarm Management system.  I see that I can filter what shows on the List by Functional Classification but it looked to me like being able to shelve is an all or nothing proposition.  I hope that I am misinterpreting that.

  Another user could shelve and operator could not? If that is the use case I don't believe it is possible other than area, locks and/or parameter security.
  If you don't what anyone to shelve Safety Classifications, you can manually configure the Shelving Timeout to 0 on these alarms to accomplish.

  Could I use a second object on the graphic?  The one on top would show all alarms except those with a Functional Classification of Safety.  All shelving is allowed on that object.  The second object at the bottom of the graphic which is filtered to only show those with a Functional Classification of Safety and no shelving is allowed on that object.  Would something like that work?

  Setting the alarm shelving time based on functional classification is a good application of classification; particularly for Safety (Related) Alarms. If you export the alarm list from the SAM or using Bulk Edit you can easily create an Excel file that would allow you to set the Shelving time to 0:0:0 for any alarms with the corresponding classification (or priority). This can also be done easily using the SILAlarm tool.

  Yes you could do that and uncheck the action option for shelving on one of them but a word of caution, this won't affect the Faceplates that have the same interface which has the shelve option enabled.

  I’m actually going at this backwards.  I already have a system in place for managing this through faceplates but not through the alarm list.  However, the Alarm List is what the operators use most frequently for working with alarms.  I appreciate the ideas that you’ve given me on this.

  Kent, I'm struggling with the same problem. I will be setting the timeout to 0, that's the easy part.
  
  The real problem is that won't prevent instruments from acting up, and ultimately shelving will be required. Our company manages this by requiring a management of change to allow shelving for such alarms. With this, a supervisor can then shelve, so I have to create a method that would allow that.
  
  There is no way I can depend on them entering a tag by name correctly, and selecting the correct alarm parameter, the only dependable method I can think of is to have buttons on our faceplates that allow suptmo to be set to a preset value, only if the user is a supervisor.
  
  We use PCSD, so the problem instantly becomes a bit more complicated.
  
  I have a prototype that does what I described, now I will need to apply that to the remaining faceplate details for the various point types.

  I see that in the AlarmList object, it displays the number of alarms within its filters that are active. Is that parameter something I can browse for such that I can use it in the visibility of the AlarmList object? Then I could make one alarm list for non Safety alarms and another on that same graphic for Safety alarms that only becomes visible when there is a Safety alarm tripped. That could draw more attention to the safety alarms and make it easy to have different shelving rules.

  You can read up on ThisUser and the OPSUPCNT parameter in Books Online. Not quite sure what you are aiming for, but this will give you some insight into the info available to you regarding alarms, and note that it would apply to the current user.
