GPS NTP Server for 14.3.1

Has anyone successfully set up a remote NTP server for an application station with DeltaV 14.3.1?  I have two DeltaV systems and want to put a GPS NTP server in the DMZ.  Each DeltaV system has 2 application stations on the L2.5 network, and I'd like to have one app station as Master Time Server and the other as Backup Time Server on each DeltaV system.  Our IT group can use the NTP server as well.

The updated KBA NA-0200-0147 indicates setting up a remote NTP may not work.  KBA NK-1800-0105 gives a workaround of deleting the default server IP addresses from the NTP.CONF file, and I'd like to know if this actually works before we purchase the GPS NTP Server.  Also does anyone have a preference between the Spectracom SecureSync 1200 and Microsemi S650?

I appreciate all the prior contributions regarding NTP and the GPS NTP time servers:)  It seeems a lot has changed with the newest versions of DeltaV.

Thank you in advance for any replies!

  • Kathy, the time sync changes made to DeltaV in v14 are not really impactful to time references coming from the remote network, in fact that part hasn't changed at all. Any variations here would be present if you have an Independent DeltaV Domain Controller in the mix, but even that is not really considered a big change to how tim sync happens through remote networks.

More significant changes were made to how NTP is used on the ACN which impacts the way time servers are configured when connecting them directly to the ACN to obtain a more accurate time reference for sequence of events.

The changes made allow both tested GPS time servers: Spectracom's or Microsemi's to be compatible with both DeltaV time sync scenarios described in the white paper: www.emerson.com/.../white-paper-deltav-network-time-synchronization-en-55974.pdf

So the decision comes to brand preference, price, connectivity options as and any extra features you might be looking for. On a DeltaV system, both time servers can function equally.

If you need support or want to have a more detailed conversation about this topic don't hesitate to reach out to me directly.

Thank you for the reply Alexandre:) It's good to know that both GPS NTP systems will work so we have options. We do have independant domain controllers also but I agree that is a separate issue. If modifying the NTP.conf file and setting it to read-only based on the KBA will work then that should be fine. Thank you for your offer to talk directly about this! I will send you an email next week.

    Thank you:)
