DeltaV Adapt

does anyone know of any good material that explains how to setup and use deltav adaptive tuning?

I can send you a tutorial in the form of a PowerPoint presentation that I presented at Exchange. Please contact me at james.beall@emerson.com
  • Hi Stuart
Gain scheduling works in DeltaV but initialisation is a problem have to go to OOS and back again
Tuning in DeltaV is not classical PID as per control books the P &I terms are not independent so tuning can’t be done by control tuning methods
Ramping SP is better for stable control

    Petroban,

I am curious about your comments on the DeltaV PID.  DeltaV has two forms of the PID, Standard and Series (aka Classical).  The Laplace equations for these two options are shown in BOL and pasted below.  Note that the Parallel Form PID is the one where the proportional gain is not applied to the Integral and Derivative terms.

I have personally tuned over 5000 DeltaV PID's with calculated tuning parameters and it follows the theory exactly.

I have also used the Gain Scheduling feature without any issues.  Please elaborate on your experience.

james, great information. many thanks. i have today started using deltav adaptive control in Full mode. The response is extremely slow and pv takes hours to reach set point. any ideas on how to speed up the response.

for each process model identified/approved, can i view the PID settings? i dont seem to be able to determine what the PID settings will be for each region?

    Stuart,
The tuning method is solid, but is directly impacted by the accuracy of the model parameters. What is the quality of the model in each area?

I don't think there is a way to see the Tuning for other regions than the one you are in. I'll double check this. You could record in History to see them later. Or, if your state variable is the PID/OUT, you could put the loop in manual and change the OUT to observe the tuning parameters in each range. If it is the SP, you could put the loop in Manual and move the SP if you don't have SP track in Manual. If you do have SP track in Manual, you could put it manual and use the SP high and low limits to move the SP around and observe the tuning. If it is the PV or "Other", you will have to put the PID in Manual, and use the Debug mode to move the PV or Other variable.
