Cannot create DeltaV user on replacement workstation, version 11.3, workstation network topology

I am able to create users on Pro Plus, and they appear on the replacement workstation (usernames appear), but whatever I enter for password, is rejected on the workstation when I attempt to log in -- the only account I can log in to DeltaV with, is the 'administrator' username, and its password, does work.

The workstation in question downloads without errors, except one: When I download this workstation, this message appears: 'Error uploading displays and charts.  Unable to copy operator graphics or chart files from workstation OPSTAT1'.  I am not sure if that is related.

I ran workstation configuration utility to set up this workstation.  It is a workgroup network topology.  Much Thanks,

Frank

  • Is this a domain system or work group?
  • Have you replicated the user accounts to the new workstation from User Manager on the Professional Plus?

My apologies, I should have specified, workgroup, Pro Plus is a member of 'DeltaV' workgroup, as are the two Operator Stations and the App Station. NONE of them can log in as anything but 'administrator'. I am pretty sure I have the system account password set right, because I can log into Pro Plus using user 'DeltaVAdmin' using that password, and it works.

I read another post saying I need to select the computer in User Manager on Pro Plus, I will try to figure out where I do that.

I do not understand the recommendation to replicate user accounts? Can you provide additional detail? It's been a few years I've used DeltaV.

From Books Online (my bold emphasis):

Creating a user account from the DeltaV User Manager creates a Windows user account and a DeltaV database account on the local computer. The DeltaV database account appears on all workstations in the workgroup. However, to log on to a workstation and use the DeltaV database account, users also need a Windows account on each workstation. To create Windows accounts on other workstations, use DeltaV User Manager to replicate user accounts to other workstations.

As far as I remember you need to create the user account with User Manager on the ProPlus. In the Properties | General tab in the Account Type area, Operating System (Windows) Account must be checked (which I think is the default). Then right-click on the user name in the users window and select Replicate Account. You should see a list of workstations on the network. Select the first one and click OK. Repeat for the other workstations. As far as I know this sets up the user  name and password in the Windows security system on that workstation. There used to be a bug which meant that after clicking replicate, User Manager occasionally crashed. Just restart it and carry on. The replication will have succeeded.

The process is a bit of a pain if you have a lot of workstations which is why a domain set up is better. Incidentally you did say workgroup in your first post. Some people don't read.

I think issue is/was a Windows problem. I was only at this site for 2 days. I could not get DeltaV User Manager to run on the two replacement workstations. Windows User Manager, showed NO users in list--not even 'Administrator' -- even though I was logged in as Administrator.

So I ended up just using DOS command line, entering 'net user Operator OPERATOR' to set Operator password to 'Operator' to match DeltaV user configuration -- as soon as I did that, I could log in to DeltaV under 'Operator' account which was the immediate problem at hand.

When I typed 'net user' it at command line, it listed all users out (Administrator, DeltaVAdmin, emerson, Maintainer, Operator, Configure, Administrator, Supervisor, etc) but oddly in 'regular' Windows GUI user manager it listed NO users.

I appreciate the advice that I must have a workgroup account identical to DeltaV account. I also understand domain setup is better, but I am no longer onsite, the immediate issue of no working standalone operator workstations has been resolved. I am posting this message to aid in troubleshooting if anyone else experiences a similar problem.

I also appreciate the recommendation to go to a domain setup and will pass that on to IT.

    Glad you got something sorted.

Note that when replicating accounts you do this from DeltaV User Manager on the Professional Plus not on the local workstation.

I suspect that "net user" did what replication does and added the operator to local Windows security.
