SISNET comm b/w CHARM Smart Logic Solver (CSLS) and M Series Logic Solvers (SLS 1508).

I have a project where I need to establish a SIL-3 rated communication between the Charm Smart Logic Solvers (new scope we are providing) and the Old and (SLS 1508) - existing.

a SIL-2 or possibly 3 rated shutdown function is shared between these two system.

The New System will have it's own ProPlus  and the Old has it's own.   Is there a possibility of SISNET communication between these system? Does having separate ProPlus impacts the system? what would be the recommended architecture?

  • Currently there is no way to communicate between the SLS1508 and the CSLS Logic Solvers. You would need to hardwire any signals that need to go between the 2 systems.

What about SIS comms between 1508 and CSLS on same system?

Is it possible to add SLS1508 to an SZ controller?
  • In reply to AdrianOffield:

The SZ Controller only has Ethernet connectivity, there is no connection to the 8-wide backplane that the SLS1508 plugs into. Currently there is no way to communicate safety rated data between the SLS1508 and the CSLS Logic Solvers.

Thanks for the response and details.
I was trying to figure out SISNET communication between these logic solvers (CSLS and SISNET repeaters on Sls1508).. similar was as it happenss between the SLS1508 logic solvers.
  • One other challenge here is the fact that you will have two separate DetlaV systems. There's no way to send a Secure Parameter from one DeltaV system to another (i.e. from a logic solver underneath ProPlus A to a logic solver underneath ProPlus B). Even if the logic solvers were all the same type, if you have two separate DeltaV systems (two ProPlus), this can't be done.

How many signals are involved here? How many SILx signals need to be passed between the systems?

    We have only 04 signals.
but the issue is the distance between the systems which limits us to do hardwired signals exchange. What we are proposing is to add a new small node in the existing room, where the old SLS sit and run SIL-3 rated Comm between the CSLS nodes and from CSLS mode close to the old Logic solvers, do hardwired.

This sounds like the best solution, with a CSLS mounted in your Existing control room, you can hard-wire a few signals across from the SLS1508 and then run a fibre-optic cable pretty much as far as you need to from the CSLS in the Existing control room to the other CSLS on the LSN in your new installation.
